Khun_Sam
Has anyone ever had a bad encounter with the Thai police? Do they discriminate against Farangs? Is the Thai police as bad as some people say? (Or are these people just drunk?)
Absintheur
Police is bad everywhere. In my country traffic police even worst than here. Sometimes you need to pay without making any faults. And I agree with viggop
WiCKeDBiRD
A few years ago ... We had -burglar- broke in our house in bkk as nobody was there. All of the telly-s, stereo-s, Dvd player-s, PC-s, Notebook-s & small gadgets, my Hubby's jeans & shoes  , my kitchen electonic-appliances were all gone. <for some reason, all of the dip-dop-s were left untouch.. NOT gone.... strange ... eh?> Now the polices manage to put the checking box in front of our house < ordered by my hubby> and manage to come by to do daily checking. It seems they get along very well with my Hubby... especially, on pay day. We feel so warm & safe. -WB-

i_love_som_tam
Taadaaa all of a sudden... the thread is going off topic ... & becoming lame.... as usual OK WB, I will try to stay on track: Having been the pho leece for 25 years, in California and on an international level I can tell you that there are corrupt police all over the world. I have arrested bad cops in America and have seen the corruption in other countries such as Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Indonesia and Thailand. In working with the UN I have been exposed to police officers from over 50 countries. Most of them have related stories of corruption in the countries and act like it is an accepted pratice in their communities. My rule of thumb when traveling to other conutries: Their house, their rules. If you abide by their rules then you will get along. If you act up, take some a**hole pills, become and a**hole when you drink or are just a natural born a**hole then you might as well have a sign on your fore head that says "Mr. Police... Please kick my ass". Most people that have bad experiences with police have caused the attention of the cops to be focused upon them (with the exception of the corrupt traffic police.) Police are disliked by most people, but who do they call when their house is burglarized, their shop is robbed, their husband bats them around or their car is stolen? I enjoy seeing peoples comments about their encounters with the police all over the world. It is very easy to read between the lines and see who it was that actually caused these encounters to occur. My two cents. PS... CiaranM
They also discriminate thai people as well.As i was enjoying my cocktails on one of the cocktailstalls at KSR, the police who drove by suddenly stopped there. They asked the people who owned the stall to hand them 1 botlle of whiskey, vodka, gin and also took 2 other bottles with them. Otherwise they would oblige those people to remove their stall.I think if it happend here in a western country the owner would even beat up the police. So FACK DA THAI POLICE indeed ! i don't think it is a clever idea to raise ur hand to a police man in ANY country, unless u r extremely rich or well connected, believe me the police r always right and u r always wrong .... despite what the evidence might say !!! Seems to be pure abuse of their power and it really pissed me off to see how much they harmed the owners. MikeAussieGuy
I dont think they discreminate against anyone in particular, just everyone. Being one of the most corrupt countries in the world, and Thaksin paying so much to his crony mates in the police and army to keep their support, they basically can do what they like. Where else in the world do police get paid a commission on their traffic fines? Just read any newspaper on any day and the first 3 pages will have new corruption charges, the police are just part of the corruption system. 7000 corruption cases with the ACCC, 4 done in 2004, 7 so far in 2005, then the ACCC all resign over corruption charges for giving themselves pay rises, timing was amazing to resign, just as the airport scandal needed investigation. One day the Thais will get a government that is there for the people instead of how much they can get while in government. Until then the police and the government can do what they want. Khun_Sam
I dont think they discreminate against anyone in particular, just everyone. Someone mentioned above that, as a foreigner, he needs 200 Baht to bribe a policeman, whereas a local can get away with 100 Baht for the same offense that they have not comitted. Maybe the Thai police is part of the tourist industry, where foreigners are charged more than locals, like at the market.
O123ok
Hello All, This is my first post and appropriately this is a subject I am well versed in. I've got to agree with Mike.To be honest,I don't really think they discriminate as a rule of thumb, but that still doesn't endear me to their methods of obtaining a back-hander.I despise corruption whether it be directed at a Thai or a foreigner.Corruption is a virus on society and will stunt the growth of the nation. All of my run-ins with boys in brown have been for motoring offences, some of which I was guilty of,and some of which I wasn't. In all I reckon I've been stopped about 15-20 times in 6 or so years of driving around Thailand, but I have never paid either a fine nor a bribe.I have a number of methods for avoiding payment, which I'd be more than happy to share with you. Firstly,if you can speak Thai, don't.Although they seem to be improving, most police can speak only a smattering of English, and if you make out you haven't got a clue what they are trying to say to you, they quite often get embarrassed about their lack of English, and will just wave you on with a look of pure frustation. On the occasion that I 've encountered a cop who can speak fairly good English,I'll start jabbering away in FrenchThis really confuses the hell out of them. Next, never surrender your driving license.Once you hand over your documents, they will hold them to ransom.End result, you gonna have to cough-up to get them back.I just tell them that I have a license, but it is at home. When they ask you where home is,I'll give them an address on the opposite side of the city. This rules out quickly popping back to get it for them to see. Once they know you don't have a license, they will have their hand out for cash to which you should tell them that your wallet it with your license, and curse yourself for being so stupid and forgetful. As you can't get blood out of a stone, most of the time they will just let you go as they are wasting valuable time with you when they could be exploiting some other unsuspecting motorists.Time is money after all. This is probably the most important bit of advice I can give.At all times, you must smile(sometimes even laugh),show respect to the point of groveling, and never, never, never get shitty with the thieving little buggers.Do that and you are playing a different ball game altogether.I find it difficult to bite my lip somtimes,so take it from me,getting pissed off with them ain't gonna work.Saying that,I used to know a guy who,on being stopped by the police would get out of his car screaming "CORRUPTION! CORRUPTION!CORRUPTION!" at the top of his voice, much to the horror and embarrassment of the cops who would send him on his way ASAP.I think the main reason he got away with this is because he an old guy.Older than the cops, that is.I doubt a young scallywag like me could get away with it,and I don't recommend anybody trying that either. On occasion I'll come across a cop who is in a bad mood, and all the charm in the world isn't gonna sway him.Just stick to your story. They will threaten hauling you down to the station, which they will never do coz of the time is money thing,or they will threaten to confiscating your car keys.If you make it clear to them that if they take your keys, you won't be able to return untill the next day, they will let you drive away, because it would mean that they would have to arrange for a tow truck to come and pick up your car and take it to the police station. All in all,a major headache for them. I know this might sound as just too much of a hassle to save a couple of hundred baht, but to me it's not the money.Firstly,I derive a bit of sick pleasure knowing that the cops have failed in scamming me,and also, like I said before,we shouldn't perpetuate the cycle of corruption in Thailand. If we want this beautiful country to develop and prosper. We must all take a stand,no matter how small to make corruption socially unacceptable.Something I know won't be happening in my lifetime, but we have to start somewhere. I seemed to have gone off the thread a bit. Please don't slate me for it WickedBird ! Peace Out..............

My family has been doing business in Asia for 3 generations,so I am fully aware of how ingrained it is. I see that your in the IT biz, which to me would imply that your main competitor on no other than "The Chairman" Shinawatra himself......interesting. Isn't he a policeman too? MikeAussieGuy
Yes Outlook I have 3 companies here in IT, one is very large dealing with a Government department and all up against "HIM" and "HIS" sister. I got stories that only dealing direct with the government would make one truly experienced in understanding how corrupt it is all here. Blow peoples mind if they saw the "process" required to get business and who gets what. And yes we are both corrupt as I voted for you as you voted for me as I voted for you as.................. **** mate we are now "part of the system". lol
farangnbkk
Well, I've had good and bad run ins. BAD: Got caught in a pat down. Cops wanted to look in my bag. No problems. One cop looked in my bag while I talked to the other cop. Result - One lost phone and 5k baht while my head was turned. GOOD: Hanging out in my friend's room when a neighbor suddenly shows up a bit nervous. A drug dealer was caught outside the building. The dealer gave up the neighbor. Eventually tracked her down to my friend's room. We didn't know what was going on until the police came. The whole scene ended up in my friend's room. All the cops, the dealer, the neighbor, and everyone else looking in whenever the door opened. The did a light toss of my friend's room and questioned her and me. Never even asked to see my passport (which I'm glad as I don't carry it). It actually all went down quite peacefully. They didn't take me nor my friend into the station when I thought they could have as they found the drugs on the neighbor inside my friend's room. I'm still very touchy when it comes to the police and will watch them like a hawk but they ain't all bad.
