The Yankees

After 151 games of a 162-game season in which they have often played, despite a $200 million payroll, like a bunch of bums....

THE YANKEES ARE IN FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, can they hold on for 11 more games?

And go on to win it all?

Stay tuned ...

(The Yankees are a baseball team from New York, my hometown, therefore my child-like excitement. And all comments about "rounders" will be met roundly with contempt and disdain.)

Hey Mr. DM,

I think in the Yankees-Red Sox comparison we're still up by, what is it, 26 world championship to, what do you guys have, 1?

So sorry you're bitter.

Whatever happens, the season-ending series should turn out to be a classic, and I'll enjoy it no matter who wins. It should be great baseball. Good for the game.

Oh, and I'm sure there are a few a**holes on the Yankees. Every team's got some nowadays. You've Curt Schilling. How do you like watching him campaign for GWB? Maybe you, Curt and Kanye West would like to get together for a few beers.

No, but players in the Major Leagues come from all over North and South America, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and even Australia.

So, it's not just Americans.

At some point, we may see a true international tournament. For now, the Major Leaguers play a series of games against the best Japanese teams every year after the season is done.

sorry...... for what is Baseball good anyway. (I am european) There are not even real international turnaments.

Baseball is a sport just like no other, just because it isn't prefered where you are at doesn't mean you have to take it away from those that do.

Acceptance please!!

u r right dave it is a sport like no other ..... but how many real men want to play rounders !!!

Baseball is played by Americans and people from more than two dozen countries.

Rounders are played by gay Irishmen.

I heard your team came in last place last year, Ciaran. But I know you like to come from behind and finish on the bottom.

Thanks.....have heard about those games with the japanese leagues. Maybe one day there will be a real "World Champion"...(no offense, ok)

No offense, but neither the top Japanese team or the top team from any other country would dispute that at this point in time whichever team wins the World Series is the best baseball team in the world.

The winner of the American League East Divsion for 2005 is:

THE NEW YORK YANKEES!!!!!

The Red Sox, however, may still make the playoffs as the wildcard team, and so still have a chance to go on and win it all.

So far, it's been a thrilling battle all the way.

By the way, Ciaran, I couldn't find one report in any paper about your beloved Tyrone. Had to search the internet to find out they actually won whatever rinky dink thing it was they won. Guess more males like male rounders than Irish football, or whatever it is you pretend to play.

well loburt if u had checked out any IRISH paper on the monday after the game u would have found numerous articles on the game, which was reckoned to be one of the best finals in years. in a country of around 5 million the game was an 82,000 sell out and had the highest TV viewing figures in ireland for any sporting event this year.

Not like you at all to display such ignorance.

82 thousand people at a football match?

Hmnn how many at comparable events, say the world cup [soccer] English FA Cup? say a big game in NYC or LA [any kind of game] Sell out crowd at Man United or Barcelona?

As was said with a population of 5.5 million on the Island of Ireland [two jurisdictions] having such a massive event is something else.

I live just down the road from Croke Park Stadium and I am always amazed by the sheer number of people who travel far and wide to attend the big matches. The atomsphere and occasion is one of the few authentic apects of Irish life and culture left. I am not a big fan of GAA but it is great to see people from all over Ireland come and have thier day in my city.

As Dubliner I am disappointed that my own County was knocked out of the all Ireland but the color and festival that this event is always makes me proud. No arrests or hooligans despite the passion involved. Now how often do we see that with 80 thousand people gathering in one place?

Well, of course I'm not gonna check the Irish paper, Ciaran. The fact that it doesn't make the regular papers is the whole point.

In any case, I'm just giving you a verbal wedgie like you're giving me. If you remember, I wished you and your team luck before the big game.

Gee, wasn't the Red Sox payroll about $150 million? Hardly a bunch of paupers.

And they couldn't even win the division, having collapsed in September and lost the lead they had held all year.

Notice I said nothing when your team got swept out in three DM.

Yes, the Yankees are done, and it's just about the result I expected. There's always next year.

Good luck to those who are still in it. But I hope the White Sox win it all.
