Question

Hi, looking for suggestions of sites to see and places to stay in the north of Thailand. What are your experiences and recommendations, people? My plan is to go to Chang Mai by train and stay for a few days then rent a car and get around a little. It would also be god to know things and places to avoid, for any reason you mention. Thanks.

/Mike

Rent a car in Chiang Rai (try Northern Wheels) and drive up to Doi Tung and DOi Mai Salong to look at the mountains and hill tribes. Take the back road to Mai Sai, visit the market across the river in Burma (well worth a look). Keep driving along the Mae Kong River taking in the sites at the Golden Triangle (stop at the Opium Museum if you have 3-4 hours spare, interesting) where you can catch a boat over to Dong Xiao Island in Laos. Its possible ot visit all three countries in half a day. Carry on through Chiang Saen where there is anice hill top temple to Chiang Kon and relax in one of the guest hourses by the river.

Just a few suggestions, hope they help.

U can visit a lot of beautiful temples in Chiang Mai (quite another style than the wats in Bangkok). Don't foget to visit Doi Suthep as well.

I wouldn't recommend Pai, try to visit Soppong (also on the road between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son), less touristic. There r a few places where u can stay and u can do hikings from there without a guide.
