DocDre
Mike Tyson has just signed with "Pride" a no rules style of mixed martial arts not unlike UFC where they fight in an octogon, Mike was actaully here in Bangkok training at Fairtex Muay Thai facility to ready himself for his ass kicking, so he isn't just a "circus act" Pride and UFC fighters are well trained multi-diciplined fighters I think he's gonna get his ass kicked in the Pride format, roman greco wrestling, Brazilian judjitsu, muay thai, ground grappling, and dirty boxing, to mention a few disiplines used. Pretty intense stuff. I think his first fight will be in Japan before UFC and Pride have a champions showdown, it might even be part of the undercard! Sad or not, freak or not, I'll be watching! DocDre
i think his first fight will be in Las Vegas, where Pride will hold its first event in the USA.Pride is better than UFC. It's a much bigger organization with much better fighters from around the world. Not to mention, much better overall presentation. Yeah, Vandilay Silva, and Chuck Lidell, Silvas gettin' old but Lidell lost to 40 plus Couture before so it should be good. A buddy told ne yesterday it's in Nov, but I don't know if Mike's on the card, if he's in Vegas it makes sense. Do you know if theyre gonna use UFC rules or Pride? Pride you can kick the guy in the head when he's down on the mat.
DocDre
Thanks e-quake. I only know his name phonetically (at least how my bad hearing has assimilated it). Cool sight, my bad... Wanderlei's a spring chicken born in 76, compared to Liddell, UFC fighters seem to get better with age for some reason! I know alot more about UFC, just being from Canada, it was aired (promoted) alot more. My Brit friends swear by Pride, and seem to think Silva's past his prime, They talked like he was Shamrock's age or something. I've only seen Pride stuff I've burned from "torrentbox.com" and that stuff was old, so I'm going to have to disagree with their thoughts on his "prime" and am looking forward to the fight (hope it's not a submission) That Torrent site is decent for downloading recent events, but the download is long, hope this recipricates your helpful link. Cheers!!
farang_subson
Don Frye, who has fought in Pride quite a bit, is on record as having challenged Tyson to a straight-up boxing match. Both guys are over the hill...seems like a natural matchup. It's not like UFC and Pride fighters have never met. Liddell made short work of Alistair Overeem (sp?) and Quinton Jackson, a couple of Pride's heros, and both Tito Ortiz and Victor Belfort have beaten Silva. So I don't question the quality of UFC fighters. Gotta agree about the UFC fans, though...no respect for the ground game, or the logistics of trying to conserve energy while you're out there. Booing at the drop of a hat.
farang_subson
Re Jackson and Liddell...oops! Wishful thinking! Last I recall, Jackson was going through the Christian conversion trip, which has spelled the end for any number of good fighters and musicians. DocDre
I gotta say it's not so much a USA thing, it's a Vegas thing, having been many times, people there develop ADD really fast, it's hard not to, instant gratification is king there. It's contagious, I wouldn't even venture that the Vegas events are attended entirely by true MMA fans, as they're hosted at casinos, so lots are going out of curiosity. College wrestling is never booed, and is highly respected for the importance of the ground game and energy conservation and strategy involved as f_s poingently points out the importance there of. It's lame that people really only get to see that Vegas croud as an example of the UFC fan base. I can see why UFC has a sub par rep to Pride in terms of MMA appreciation. It's Vegas, they want a knock out and blood, they're drunk from compt drinks, they're angry because they dropped a few 100$ minutes before entering the venue. They don't seem to appreciate a submission move from the bottom, they want to see aggression, not precision. It would be interesting if they tried a different venue. Madison Square Gardens would be cool, even better Lumpini! Ha, ha... It would sell out for sure! Thanks zammos2, good info. Oops 8pm channel 36 UFC (from 2 years ago probably) unless they pre-empt it for Thai badminton or whatever Thai sports content is deamed more important. CocoaBrotha
I'll just say in Brief that Mike is up there in age and doesn't have the "killer mentality" he used to have. I'm curious as to see how far he goes.
711_Dimsum
I remember when UFC first came out.I thought, oh man, with mixed martial arts, this is gonna be like Bloodsport.I think most of it just pretty boring now. There's been some good fights, but it always ends up locks and arm bars and so forth.Makes me relish a good boxing match. I can't comment on Pride, Ive never seem that televised in the U.S. As for Tyson.I think if your up against someone with mixed martial arts, your gonna get your ass kicked 3 ways from Sunday. DocDre
MMA is gay, groundfights are boring to watch.K1 is a lot more fun to watch in my opinion. If MMA is gay then I guess K1 is too. MAA: Mixed Martial Arts K1:K-1 is a martial arts fighting sport which fuses centuries of tradition from martial arts such as karate, kung fu, tae kwon do and kickboxing (the "K") into a thoroughly modern and electrifying spectator sport, to determine the single best stand-up fighter in the world. Pride (and to an extent UFC), is to let the fighters "fight" and win by any means possible (with the exception of eye gouging of tecniques that might render the opponent crippled or dead.) K1 is for fighters that don't have a ground game. Ground game is boring? To see a guy getting ground and pounded while covering the mat in his own blood to slip his opponent into a triangle or arm bar to submit and defeat him is amazing to watch. K1's allright but no full use of brazilian juditsu? That ain't well rounded MMA's
DocDre
Here is a statement from the Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer after Kevin Randleman lost to Shogun (Mauricio Rua) Tuesday. Randleman got piss tested for performance enhancing supplements. "It was either allegedly non-human urine or urine from a dead human being," Kizer said. Now THAT would be a cool episode of CSI Vegas, where the f**k did he get the sample from? LOL P.S. Can anybody provide a smack down on Rua right now? This guys a monster!!! (by the way, I mean currently, this guy in in fine form) Who do you think can defeat him?

macca_tirana
A recent article on BBC Radio 5 talked about the new phenomina of MMA. In the states a boxing match is classed as a big success if over 300,000 subscriptions are made for pay per view. MMA is taking an average of 600,000 per event. Never seen it myself but sounds good, from a distance
Fat_Tony
ps. Anyone claiming MMA to be "gay" is bound to be called gay himself Well said, Ive never found MMA to be a sport to induce homosexual thoughts or actions. It might be a Dutch thing. . .. .
