anenglishman
yeah i would agree that most of it is at least tangential to the bar scene. whatever his merits or de-merits, the guy does write well and his titles are clever and funny. it's like a lot of content on the nt...some love, some hate and some are in-between. U and I ... well him Lucky for TF there are always pedantic ***** like me around... actually the correct form would be you and me; look what happens when you take out the "U" in the saintly, blessed version: lucky for the moral well being of TF and the world at large there's guys like I around lucky for tf there are always pedantic, anal retentive ***** like me around. we have very high standards of grammar, usage and spelling.... he said, completely ignoring proper punctuation and capitalization. That reminds me of the book I was reading today, Thorstein Veblen's The Theory of the Leisure Class. along with leisure have evolved Leisure Hos: artsy types who pimp themselves out as writers, painters, filmmakers etc. basically making a living from leisure displays. it's interesting how veblen's conspicuous consumption theories neatly fit into the theory that our brains are like peacock feathers. in other words, our leisure talents, such as singing, writing well, telling jokes, painting, etc. have all the hallmarks of a mating display: they are utterly wasteful and costly to produce, and a parasite-infested or otherwise unhealthy individual is unlikely to be able to produce them. also, whereas survival adaptations tend to be universal across a species--every healthy, intact human can acquire grammar--'display' talent is obviously differentially distributed. not every human could write like shakespeare, paint like picasso, or play trumpet like louis armstrong. if the theory is true it would explain why artists and musicians who make no money still manage to get laid. zeusbheld
along with leisure have evolved Leisure Hos: artsy types who pimp themselves out as writers, painters, filmmakers etc. basically making a living from leisure displays. What you call hos above are people providing "stuff" to fill someone else's leisure with. The production of this stuff isn't necessarily a leisure activity in itself. that's the very definition of "ho" innit. Of course most people here are leisure hos i think most people here are leisure sluts, not hos. the ho's is gettin PAID. there are some ho's here, but on this website we're all leisure sluts. event the mods dont' get paid. all of us, including the ho's, are "leisure johns"--even painters look at other paintings, etc. and TF is definitely an LHMS (Leisure Ho Management System). We all do this parading in our free time (wherever that may be, preferably at "work") and provide others with a non-productive way to fill some of their time. LSMS. Mating displays wasteful and costly to produce? Costly alright but wasteful? Only if they -don't- lead to sex then, don't you think? exactly. the costs are very high either way. peacock feathers are very wasteful, coz only the most perfect peacocks get laid. in humans, the best rock stars get laid often. for them it's not a waste per se but there's a lot of excess energy pissed away that perhaps doesn't need to except to show that you have it to burn.. on the other hand, being able to pick up a guitar and pluck out the first few bars of "purple haze" cleanly take a fair bit of practice--and a guitar--not that cheap or easy--and probably won't get you laid. wasted display. NigelBragg
I wouldn't think it entirely fair to compare Stickman's site with TF. I think they are fundamentally different in conception. Stickman's site (to which I posted a long time ago), has its good points and its bad. TF likewise, but it is much more dynamic, user friendly and immediate. For instance I can post something I want to say and the response is immediate. In comparison, is that a good thing or a bad thing? HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with you Ant. Stickman has some rare gems on his site (if you are prepared to look past the whoring) and it is a site from which I have learnt a fair bit.
