Constitutional Court rulings

That the verdict took mysteriously long time to be blurred out. :) More to the point, I wonder what are the problems before the next elections in december, as it will be hard time to make new parties, get members, get them registerered, get the word out, get campaigns on etc before the election. Danger of the elections being "puppet elections"? Can there be REAL political organizations and activity before December...

Well, this was "Scenario 2" in The Nations list...Scenario 4 where both parties would have been disolved but the leaders left untouched would have been my bet...

Sounds like a clear, strong decision, just as the king requested. I think it will smooth the way for elections and a transition to a democractic government, yet it makes room for Thaksin to come back, giving his supporters something to hold on to and a reason for going along.

Seems like the best that could be hoped for, given the circumstances. And considering the fact, quite fair too. I hope the courts and the coupmakers drop their desparate search for corruption by Thaksin and leave well enough alone.

By the way, I hope you are feeling OK. Are you in the hospital now?

While the court is clear and strong I hardly think it was in line with what the King requested. As I understand it, he wanted those responsible for wrong doings punished while the junta has chosen to have given a blanket ban to the whole party.

Politicians - such as Somkid Jatusiripak - have been banned for five years despite the fact that there is no evidence that he has done anything wrong apart from voting for TRT.

This is a big mistake. What right does an unelected junta have to say who should be in power?

It should clearly be up to an open election.

From what I've heard a number of about 110 have been barred from politics for 5 years. Do people such as somkid also fall under this decision? I sort of remember the house seats about 400.. What about the other 280.. Please enlighten us.

Overall a bold decision... and a good one imo. TRT members must have been aware of unknown parties entering the race to overcome the 20% obstacles was anything but normal.

A strange thing though that a new party can take over the name TRT again. That will be confusing and they will try to explain it away to country folks as... it's still TRT because what we did wrong was not so bad.... or we did nothing wrong at all...

Let's see what tomorrow brings...

The court didn't give blanket blame to the whole party. In there statement, they were pretty clear on who they blamed.

...........But the verdict laid much of the blame for shaky Thai Rak Thai political deals on the back of founder and then-leader Thaksin Shinawatra, still in foreign exile. The judges said Mr Thaksin had used the party for his own benefit, and Thai Rak Thai had no political ideology beyond its leader's ambitions.

Also, they only punished 111 people of the party of the 14million that were regidtered.

This is IMHO a good move. Get rid of the people that showed they were simply puppets, unwilling to disagree.

The court also, from what I can see, followed HM the King's words pretty closely, making it very clear to the average citizen of why they made the descisions they did, as HM the King asked them to do.

i had made an optimistic guess that the judges will declare that they are not accountable to judge the disband of political party.

:D When i woke up to check the news it was still not finished.

And Pantip.com declared that they had hardware errors.

A Good drama. The miscalculation teaches me that : do not take into account a word of whoever declares itself as against Capitalism, however manage to be put in a list of richest person of the world.

I like this comment from one of the judges in explaining the verdict too

"The defendant is responsible for holding up democratic ways, but instead it used parliamentary election only as a means to achieve totalitarian power," Judge Vichai Chuenchompoonuj said.

"It goes to show that the defendant does not believe in the democratic system," he said of the party. "It also shows no respect for the rule of law which is key to the democratic system."

Somehow I think these quotes would be better applied to the military government.

I liked Chaturon's comment 'People who seize power dictate what is right or wrong... even though that power came from the end of a gun barrel.'

'People who seize power dictate what is right or wrong... even though that power came from the end of a gun barrel.'

Very great quote... Altho i do agree that TRT is deserved to be dissolved but the politicians banning list is kinda unfair...

Im waiting patiently for the election now after this... They'd better bring it on and yeah on the certain time too!!

These comments from a guy that the day before said he'd accept, and respect the decision of the court, yet when they came down, and affected him, he's vocally totally rejecting the decision, and vowing to appeal it, even though the rulings are not open to appeal.

Reminds me of Nixon's words when he was removed from office in the USA. "I am not a crook"....lolol.

I see that they are thinking of granting an amnesty to TRT executives not involved in bribing smaller parties. At last some common sense seems to be prevailing.

Hmm, isn't the english word for this something like "back peddling" or how do you spell it? I mean, first making a decision and then going back on it as you said, common sense starts to prevail and some "face" is needed to be saved (which is always bit silly after the milk is spilled and the silly thing has happened..:)))
