English_George
Just had my credit card cloned and used in Australia........ ........The bank didn't even know how people do it??? Not through any online security problems though that's for sure........how do they do it then? Does anybody know? I'm always tight with my receipts and shred the lot, how do they get the details? Probably a simple answer, but just want to know thanks

Khun_Sam
Just found out two fraudulent transactions going through my credit card account. One payment was made to DTAC and the other one to airasia.com. I reckon some fukker must have got hold of my credit card details. I cannot remember using my credit card in places other than seemingly reputable restaurants and shops. Who can you trust nowadays? From now on I'm paying cash. Khun_Sam
This is the first time I've had this experience on my credit card. Is this a frequent occurrence in Thailand?
babyoiy
Beware of this such thing. Make sure you have your eyes on your card when you give it to cashier or whoever... The bank wont listen to you because it was yourresponsibility to keep your own stuff... You will have to pay at the end with no negotiation. One guy I know sign off on the signature tab that "ID CARD REQUIRED" I didnt know that it's acceptable but he really do that. Never ask if He ever use it in Thailand. Offcourse I dont think its applicable when u do online transaction.
trocks69
there are a couple of ways to clone a card. it all depends on how good of a card you want when you clone it. 1..online ordering--just need numbers, date and 3 digit code on back or if amex 4 digit code on front 2..actually making/swap info on existing card..get your card number...use computer program to inbed into exsiting card...but numbers on front of card will not match numbers on magnetic strip 3...same as above but you actually make a card from scratch all numbers match.. 4..this has to be done at a store or atm just mainly have to swipe your card. this gets all the info off the magnetic strip. then they usually inbed into a brand new made card with all numbers match. card will pass all but most stringent exams. there are a couple of other ways, but these are the most popular and easiest to do. destroying your recipts will stop the non-pros and just being carefull with the card it self. but if a pro ever wants your info he will get it and it will most likely be at a place you hand your card to a clerk and he scans the card with a machine..not much you can do to prevent this. frankenburner2
In the UK they used to clone the card but had to "peep" your pin numbers using either a hidden camera, telescopes or just hanging around looking.Previously most Thailand ATM cards didn't enjoy privileges like Maestro, Solo and/or Switch but as they become more mainstream I grow increasingly fearful of using my cards. I rarely use credit cards and make sure it's only in places where i can see the card at all times. Never in restaurants or petrol stations. As the world becomes more connected and hi tech more electronic cons will become prevalent thru these technologies being hacked. Do you really think putting chips in passports will increase their effectiveness? Has it made keeping my own money safer? Next they'll have your money and your identity... luckily, i haven't any money nor any real identity to speak of....sniff sniff...
sunsnow
In Finland during this summer a foreign gang had installed readers on unattended gasoline stations in bit off the beaten track so to speak. The gang was later caught by Central Police. (Ha,they were not smart enough) Also this year went to court a group of foreigners (yeah, we Finns are actually too dumb to pull anything like this off) who were running for long time already a local kiosk. It was otherwise legitimate business but at some point they had started cloning customers credit cards (this required some balls, I think first time someone who has license for official reader has been doing "sidebiz"). Then there is the recent jc_hkt example from Phuket. Here is some pics: http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/showthread.php?t=2720 Ps. I dont know about others but buying online with Visa is currently pretty annoying. Currently it seems that every shop has now installed the Verified by Visa system etc. So now where ever I go and want to order something online, I need to always carry also my banks online bank security codes,as every purchase is secured with them, so I cannot no longer make a single purchase with just my Visa. I ran into this last year in Thailand when I was trying to buy a ticket to AirAsia and alas, no can do as obviously I had not carried my online bank numbers with me to Thailand and this was new thing back then... Yea, I feel pretty secure purchasing online, as even I cannot do it myself as simply anymore
