Joopjip
Following my last post of globalisation..I guess we all know it brought along the culture of consuming more than the mother earth can provide and today we somehow cannot avoid consuming natural resouces to maintain our so-called happiness in life. Sorry to bore you all to death but I was totally inspired by one of the lectures I just had about sustainability and if there's every a need for cultural change it is now! and toward sustainable living. It is not just to save the polar bears but the poor people who live in degraded environment because of you! The only way to achieve sustainable world is for you to kill yourself because there's no way you can reproduce what you consume everyday but one step at a time..maybe tomorrow u will ask urself - is this paper come from a renewable or recycled resource? is it from an illegal foresty in vietnam? - do i need to drive today? to the market 100 metres away? - do i need to eat as much as i eat? do i finish everything i order? who suffers because of my eating habit? - does this jeans come from child labour, do the people who manufactured it have good and safe work environment and fair pay? - will i suffer if i don't turn on the a/c and generate heat for the poor people next door? and Co2 to destroy the world? - do i need to turn all these lights on? - are all my electrical appliances low-energy rated? - will my children have the right to have what i have? see what i see? breathe? - can we move to another planet after f**ing up this one? "Hello people of pluto can we share your planet because we sort of hehe kill ours?" I know this seems far-fetched to most people because you do not know what it is like to live in a beautiful natural world and you settle with your little concrete hole and a 4w drive? But your happiness should not rely on a 4w drive but the smell of fresh air, water and the sound of the singing birds..Turn on the tv and you will see how many species and people suffer because of your lifestyle and you do not have to care no..you can close the door and pretend you cannot make a difference..or you can tell ur children "my life is my message" (like Gandhi) How do u look anyone in the eye when u offset ur **** to others everyday... sunsnow
This week monday came a Swedish, excellent, scary, interestingly produced doucment, first part of four part series called The Planet. Next parts tagline is "If human consumption stays the same, there will be needed five planet in 2050". http://www.charon.se/Engelska/The%20Planet.html Lessons from first par that I remembert: Nigeria takes in every month 25 tons of electronics waste. One of the guys in the "junkyard" explained in his broken english how "West is full of garbage already, but Nigeria has lots of space still"...This was one of the "engineers". The **** is just laid around, guys handling the same way as in Asia the waste: no protection, stuff just dumped around. Other lessons: if something, Chinas need for cars has taught that it is essential that China WON'T follow West's steps of industrialization. It is just impossible for Chinese to have as much cars as their Western counterparts do. Impossible. If the ratio of cars were there same as in the USA, China would need 1,1 billion cars, which is more than the whole world has currently cars, that is 600 million. Or that the paveways, motorways in China would require as much space as all the rice fields in China. Chinese ppl just cannot have the same level of consuming than West, it is essential that they leapfrog the development, go past the Western situation to the next level of more sustainable style. Oh and Himalayas, their waters that run down the hills to the Asias big rivers...it is drying up. What will the 300 million Chinese do now that there is less and less water irrigating the lower lands around the Himalayas...If Chinese used as much meat, the whole world's grain fields would not be enough (this last thing I cannot remember correctly, I try to record the rerun on saturday...)etc etc ... So if you can somehow get your hands to this doc, get it. As it says in it's webpage, the visual style is something I personally have never seen in a documentary. Thomas_K
getting humanity to change as a whole is nearly impossible ....6.6 billion people and growing strong every day we are all guilty !! http://www.peterrussell.dreamhosters.com/Odds/WorldClock.php
