NewZealandGuy
Hey everyone, Just a quick question here. If a Farang were to recently have come to Thailand, with no work Visa(unsure of that one yet) from New Zealand, what options do I have open to me in terms of Banking (apart from giving it to my "thai wife")? I have done a bit of research and to be honest the banking system in Thailand seems very closed to Foreigners. The reason I am asking is that I intend on coming through to Thailand for 2+ years whilst I study my Accounting degree extramurally, and possibly pick up some work along the way (depending on how my business is going). Needless to say, it would be stupid to carry around my funds for 2 years in my pocket, or in the draw at my apartment. My New Zealand bank charges me 4USD per withdrawl from Thailand, so I want to avoid that option if I can. Does HSBC, being an international bank, have anything to offer I wonder? Your wise insight is highly valued, Farang men of Thailand, and pretty banking ladies (mostly from Krung Thep).
NewZealandGuy
Thanks for that, I did read that article earlier however it only appeared to cover retirees, though admittedly I do not know everyones individual situations. I should have mentioned I guess, that I am a 23 year old male, so have a few years yet before I have the pleasure of endulging in my retirement years. funky_house
Try one. If they won't allow you to open one, just go to another bank. Or even another branch of the same bank. Sooner or later you will get one.
NewZealandGuy
Seems like it will depend on: A: My luck B: My smile (ha ha) and C: My Visa I will have to figure out which Visa I can get during my stay, and work from there. Because I dont have a degree yet (thats what Ill be studying for whilst I am in Thailand) I doubt I will meet eligibility criteria for a working Visa. Ah well, I have a year to figure that one out. Thanks for all of your advice, you've answered the question Ive been asking myself for my last 2 trips to the Land of Smiles and confusion. Have a good one

I think if you studied Accounting intermurally it would be easier to open a Thai bank account . Just need to show the bank your student id . Niranahm
Hey Cherie I need a permanent residency icon_razz.gif Unfortunately marriage does not give you permanent residency in Thailand. The only help it might be is that the fee is reduced from 197,400 baht to 97,400 baht. But you have to be married for three years before it can count on the application. Given Cherie's track record and the costs of a wedding, probably not worth it

I would actually recommend Siam Commercial bank as more flexible, and less likely to turn you down for not having a work permit. This is based on the experience of others I know. Also having used many banks here for many years, Siam Commercial bank has much better internet banking than the big two. BBL and KBank through all kinds of hoops against farangs easily getting online banking.
smaller
I opened an account with Kasikorn at the start of this year and it was a breaze... Had passport with "O "visa and all they wanted was an address in Thailand and my mobile numbe. 500baht(opening account fee) and 30mins later i walked away with Thai bank account and the phone number of the lady who took care of me... Don't you just hate paradise!!!
