I was just reading a comment in the new airport thread in the forums, and it reminded me of this vid clip of a 747 landing at the old Kai Tak airport in HK, in extreem cross wind conditions. I bet the smell on board was just lovely afterwards!!!

For all you aviation buffs, check out the rudder movement very closely!!!

Awesome landing! Reminds me of the many times I arrived at Wellington airport in New Zealand. It's just like that only there are big piles of rocks either end of the very short runway, and it's always windy.

PiAnt: Yes, you are totally right, he sure can...BUT...He should have executed a go-around. No doubt about that.

FB2: If I was on that plane, Things would have not been very pleasurable in the odour department at all!!!!

Khun_Lung: I always wanted to take a flight there just for the experience, missed out though.

Poul: The airport is not dangerous at all. It's just the planes and pilots you have to be careful of!!! (Especially KLM!!!!!!!!!!!!)

apparently that is the standard angle of approache for that airport. (or so I was told during my aircraft training in the military) the old boys used to rave about he landings at that place. i wont say sadly(because i enjoyed them all) but i have had rougher landings

An hour long program has been shown a few times on Discovery (i think) about the testing of new A380.

If you get the chance watch it.

It includes turning of all engines at 40,000, landing with tail scrapping on runway, landing on a flooded runway and bouncing the whole aircraft on one wheel because of landings like this.

Not a plane spotter, prefer trains, but well worth seeing what these guys can do

Wellington Airport

"Ladies and gentlemen...this is your captain speaking...please don't be alarmed if you are noticing we are approaching the runway from the side. In the event that the wind prohibites us from landing the aircraft...we will do our very best to make it airborne again...please make sure your seat belts are firmly fastened and please read the emergency landing card in the pocket in front of you once again.......may god be with us"

They get the planes down in the end but the worst part was trying to hold onto a rope from the aircraft to the terminal building in 100kph winds.

Many a hair piece was lost in those winds......

Geez......I hope my flight out tomorrow and in the day after is anything but like that. Even though I fly to often I still think anything like that is scary. And yes kai tak landing between 'em buildings...u always thought someday someone was gonna crash into 'em. Thanks Stu!
