My good friend and his wife are due to have their 1st child in the next few weeks. I have been asked to be godfather and whilst very honoured to be chosen I really have no idea what is expected from a godparent.any ideas? advice?

Go to see your godson/ goddaughter often than any other chirldren in you whole family, give them a gift on their birthday, keep in touch, take them to camping, travelling or whatever sometime..

I'm not sure how you will feel but when you will feel like you have some connection with them, u gotta go to church with them everytime they do something about religion which Im not sure how many time till they are 15 yo?.. but it's ok if you will just be their godfather but not seeing them that much etc.. my cousin got a good Godmother who's always in touch but her Godfather isn't, his own kid doesn't live with him tho' so I dont surprised that my cousin said he hasn't take her out anywhere or give her anything on her birthday.

My cousin's godparents are her own uncle, and auntie in law, my aunt pick one who wasn't get along well with her but now all problem gone... that one quiet shocked to be chosen and she's doing good job, smart my aunt right? :D...

In tradition, it is a very responsible position, one thing is if (god forbid) anything was to happen the mother and father you are suppose to take over in regards to education etc.

1. Pray for your godchild regularly

2. Set an example of Christian living

3. Help him/her to grow in the faith of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in which he was baptized

4. Give every encouragement to follow Christ and fight against evil

5. Help your godchild to look forward to confirmation.

Whoever you choose, I hope your child truly benefits.

Best of luck.
