Today is the day we remember the those who have died in conflicts across the world. My greatest thanks goes to The USA,The former Soviet Union, Allied  forces and to the countries of the commonwealth of Great Britain, for the help and sacrifice in the efforts of the First and Second World Wars. My sympathies also go to the peoples of the opposing forces who also suffered greatly in one of history's darkest hours.Let's hope, the different situations we are now seeing across the world can somehow be resolved soon and the peoples involved can live happy, prosperous and peaceful lives.I know lots of people in Kanchanaburi (Thai and Foreign ) who would have been to the Don Rak and Chungkai war cemeteries today, to lay wreaths to honour and remember the dead and I hope everyone today spares a thought for all the unfortunate people who have died.So the next time you decide to shout and disagree with something, remember you only can because of all those brave men and women who fought for all our freedoms today. The Glorious Dead. You shall be remembered.Photobucket

The only thing I would like to add is that Remembrance Sunday only remembers those in the services who have laid down their lives in conflict, often fighting against fascism, communism, oppression etc.

However, you can choose to wear a white poppy instead, which remembers not only those in the services, but EVERYONE who has died as a result of war or conflict.

Let's hope that one day loss of life (in uniform and out) on such huge scales will be a thing of the past.

in the book it only says 'Remembrance Day 11 November, commemorates those who died in World War1, World War 2 and other wars. Many people wear poppies ( a red flower) in memory of those who died. At 11 am there is a two-minute silence'

thats why i was confused..thank you for the links..will check them out.. have a nice evening :)

Further to Danny's point, Remembrance Sunday came into being at beginning of World War 2, so that the 2 minute silence would not interfere with wartime production, therefore it is always the Sunday closest to the 11th.

I always visit my fathers grave on this day. His life was not taken during World War II when he served, but he did lose many friends. He was not much for talking about it, and I can understand. He endured many hardships in his life, and it was cancer in the end that claimed him.

I think we should also take a moment to remember those who died on November 11, 1918 in the five hours from 6 am until 11 am when the Armistice came into effect.

The Armistice had actually been signed late on the day before, November 10. Both sides had already agreed to all the terms. There was no more territory to be gained or lost. No reason at all to fire another shot.

And yet, on the morning of November 11, American, British and French commanders ordered an all out assault across No-Man's Land for the sole purpose of satisfying their anger and hatred by killing more Germans.

And as a result, for five hours, thousands of American, British, French and German young men were killed, maimed for life and wounded - and lifelong tragedies and sorrows inflicted upon their families and loved ones - just to satisfy the hate and blood lust of a few old men with uniforms and stars on their shoulders.

Never has the sheer insanity of war been so blatantly displayed.

Next time men in uniforms with stars on their shoulders tell us what we should do and what is good for us, remember those five hours on the morning of November 11, 1918.

Yes, Remembrance Day indeed.

Loburt - bit to add - the time was set for 11am as armistice in order to allow the news of peace to filter through to all troops.

Soldiers on BOTH sides conntinued to shoot at and kill each other, not for those few hours, but for up to 2 days after the official armistice, as that was how long it took for the news to get to all the troops.
