the suadi girl who was was gang raped for being alone in a car with a frind she has known since high school was pardoned by the king of Saudi Arabia.  however read this from the official information Saudi Justice Minister Abdullah bin Muhammed al-Sheik told al-Jazirah newspaper that the pardon does not mean the king doubted the country’s judges, but instead acted in the “interests of the people.”“The king always looks into alleviating the suffering of the citizens when he becomes sure that these verdicts will leave psychological effects on the convicted people, though he is convinced and sure that the verdicts were fair,” al-Jazirah quoted al-Sheik as saying notice the important part "though he is convinced and sure that the verdicts were fair" so basiclly 6 months in jail and 200 lashes as a victim is fair.  In the US this makes you wonder where are the organizations who once screamed for women's rights like NOW, code pink, and others. Now the girl has to face something even worse her family who under Islamic law must stone her to death to regain their honor. May our prayers be with her because no one in that seems to be.  Truly sad.

I dont see any card....... did I miss something?

Well, it's always sad to hear this kind of story but if it's the law of their country which most people in that country agreed then what ppl in other countries could do? Can the rest of the world tell the States not to do something? I'm not saying I ever agreed with this muslim law but it's too sensitive to be involve in this issue, esp it's religion related thing... but yes we can pray for her..

I want to hear islamic comment about this... both male and female.

baby... those who have tried to change the sharia type laws are often killed. Even in the west people who attempt to expose the radicalization of their mosques are harrassed, threatened and attack. Plus consider that to leave islam is punsihable by death.... this is by the state!

Paul, the very first line of your journal is total bollocks!!

The girl was not gang raped "for" being alone in a car with a friend, and you fail to mention that the man she was with was also gang raped. That crime has nothing to do with any laws, it was a gang of men who took advantage of a situation for their own satisfaction, believe it or not rape also happens in almost every country in the world..........including the good old U S of A. Just thought Id clear that up :-)

Im not aware of any laws here in Saudi Arabia that say the family must now stone the girl to death, but I will be very surprised if that happens.............

I have to agree with FREETHEWORLD it is not the islam itself but some narrow minded powerfull and therefore dangerous people. Last week I had a conversation with another dutch guy and his thai girlfriend, he said islam is on of the purest religions, no materialism for whorship like many other religions.

I had to agree on that part but I do believe that the purity is long gone, the thing is it that the islam is corrupted and infiltrated by the wrong people, the religion itself is not agressive or hatefull but the wrong people make followers beleive that. If only more muslims could and espacially dared to think for themselves it would solve a lot of sorrow. But unfotunately governments in those kind of countries would like think show their respect by cutting off your head if you even think about rising towards them.

Just hope that the people who got raped won't have to face any other horrible things and that they can leave this event in the past somehow.

PS: Do you think you can believe all about this news too? oh! I just see I_am_George's comment. If so those are sick ppl who add more bad reputation to their community (both Islamic and the country). Well, I read from somewhere about this such thing that the male family member *could* do that, they can kill their female family members if they think those women did anything wrong. But I'll be glad to hear that it's all wrong.))

I_am_George : I'd like to hear more about this case, as I guess you live there, you might be able to get more detail. Curious what happened to the guy that was gang raped?

Of course, when I say becoz most ppl agreed I meant those male there tho' Since we all know women there cannot choose anything even their own lifes and if I can choose I won't live there. I'm interested in this religion and aware that it's injustic for women and all other ppl that is not muslim too. I'm not even brave enough to visit any muslim country tho' beoz Im both a woman and non-muslim.

One of the worst places on earth in human rights. Sharia laws allow the court to impose corporal & capital punishment (from cutting your hands / feet off to beheading and stoning). And these punishments are often given to criminals without due process.

And lucky you if you're a woman in this country. You're gonna be discriminated in all aspects of your life from education, jobs and justice system. Women are not allowede to testify in court in most cases. That's why men who commit rape can easily get away with it in this country.

It's funny that western worlds condemned Saddam for human rights records but say nothing about what's going on in Saudi Arabia.

it is not only Saudi Arabia, in some countries is worst than that...it can not help that we can not change what they believe ,especially , it is about religions....and everything there is base on religion ...

It's sad when a whole religion considers women as just a piece of property. This kind of justice isn't unique to Saude Arabia, it happens in EVERY islamic country. Most of the time though it's refered to as tribal law, same thing, but it keeps the association with the actual religion hidden. There have even been cases of tribal law enforcement in England. Granted the killers were procesuted under English law, but they acted under tribal law in killing there wives. In there eyes they did nothing wrong in killing them, and firmly believe that.

Sure there are people within the religion that don't agree, but they are sllent for fear of death. It's funny how strong the real fear of death is as a convincer. Just look at Myanmar, different religion, but given the real fear of death, the uprising stopped dead. One man/woman with a gun speaks for everyone without one.

Abu Daubi is in the process of trying to give women the right to drive by themselves. It will be interesting to see if it materializes.
