good news for Citeh fans (for Americans, Citeh is how Mancunians pronounce Siddy). The Toxic avenger is toast.furthermore, the dudes who bought the joint do appear to be a front for the Abu Dhabi royal family. That implies a couple of things: vast amounts of oil money, and that they'll be more interested in the club winning prizes than making money. In other words, Abu Dhabi is the new Russian Federation, and the new Romey has more than one face (not commenting on their honesty, merely observing that there are several people involved in the owning organization). the bad news is slight--the toxic avenger gets to keep a (limp dicked and powerless) seat on the board. Meanwhile, the new kings of siddy have promised to squander 50 MILLION (not sure if they mean pounds or euros) on new players before the transfer deadline in a few hours. the jewel in the crown, so to speak is this: siddy have bid on Berbatov. The bid is higher than ManUre's according to the rumor mill. does anyone seriously think the sulky one will choose siddy over ManUre? i sure don't... however, as one wag put it:

2.34pm:
"Is it me, or does Mark Hughes have a fantastic sense of humour?" asks Gareth Bourne. "His main activity today is scuppering his city rivals from getting the player they have coveted for a year. Berbatov won't want to go to City, though, because they are not in Big Cup - and Tottenham won't sell to United for a lesser amount if they have had a higher offer elsewhere." Fair point.

fyi, for my fellow Ah Merkins... "humour" is how the brits spell humor. they have this habit of adding extra letters to things. except for that and the food, though, they're all right. and um... as for the food... all that mushy boiled **** is disgusting but fish and chips... um... i can get with fish and chips.....

slight update, same source as the Hughes quote:

2.39pm: "Why do these super rich types only buy clubs who play in blue?" muses Simon Martin. "Is it that red was traditionally the colour of communists, and they are concerned that if they bought such a club their money could be used to purchase tractors which are then distributed to the poor of the parish?" Any billionaires contemplating the bucking of that trend should address their enquiries to Mr R. Parry, Chief Executive, Anfield Road, Liverpool L4 0TH ..

They also bought Vincent Kompany, a Belgian international, just after the Olympics. And I wouldn't wonder if the same guys don't have something to do with Etiihad airlines, the official airline of the UAE.

funky_house: when we use the words we sell the extra letters... at a profit.

thaibel: Kompany was a great signing IMO, but it is worth noting, that was made before the Abu Dhabi crowd sealed the deal.

UPDATE: some sources have siddy's bid for Dimitar BItchitov as being accepted. I doubt he'll go there, but oh, the drama...

?I don't want to put a figure on what will be available (for squad strengthening), like £100million, because more than that might be needed.?

romie, romie romie romie. you can't out-money oil money.

it'll take siddy time to reach the level of prestige that players like villa and gomez, who they also bid on, will go to siddy even if the bid is accepted, but at least it fires a shot around the football world.... shameless spending is about to happen.

some might think that this sort of thing ruins football... but at this point it's worth remembering that pro sports are basically entertainment. and a demented denouement day of silly season is excruciatingly entertaining, even if strikingly sordid....
