well the irish community in thailand, with help from other ex-pats and thai friends, recently hosted the 14th Asian Games in Bangkok. it was a fantastic weekend of irish sport, music and the occassional drink .... report below is taken from :http://www.thaigaa.com/wp/?page_id=9 Asian Gaelic Games – October 2009October 16-18th was an amazing weekend of sports, music, craic and wicked thunder storms in Bangkok. The Bangkok AGG, organised by the Thai GAA, was definitely one of the best games in recent years. 550 + players – men, women and children – in over 50 teams from all parts of Asia and the mid east descended on the playing fields of Bangkok Patana School to battle for the Asian County Championship.Despite the monsoon like weather and interrupted play due to flooding, there were some fantastic displays of football with the match of the tournament surely the quarter final between Thailand Mens A and Malaysia A which Thailand won with a sudden death point. The mens A tournament was won by Hong Kong for the 4th year running, with Singapore winning the ladies A tournament. However both Thailand’s men and ladies teams made a huge impact on the tournament with some brilliant individual and team football. The men’s team went through Saturday undefeated with 3 from 3 and finished top of their group. The ladies team lost their first game but then went on to win their next 4 in a row. The men reached the B Cup semi-final where they lost to Singapore by a single point, and the ladies fell by the same score to Malaysia in the B competition. The performances exceded expectations but should be of no surprise given the quality of the footballers currently to be found living in Thailand. These performances were recognised by the Asian County Board with both John Campbell and Orlagh McHugh receiving All Star awards, however many more were equally deserving of the accolade. Everyone played their part and contributed to our success. Truly outstanding performances from Jarred, Simon, and Trevor on the mens teams, with Orlagh and Louise driving the girls forward all day. MVP of the weekend must surely be Nicole whose breathtaking display of goal scoring impressed all. Special mention to Guitar for notching her first point in competitive football. Not to be outdone Thailand’s children’s team – the Thai GAA Cubs – put on some outstanding displays managing to beat Singapore and only losing to Malaysia. These performances was all the more remarkable considering the kids only took up the sport a month before the tournament !The weekend culminated with the AGG Awards dinner at the Dusit Thani, attended by over 700 players, fans and friends of Ireland. The mood for the evening was set by Mick Moloney and his Bangkok Ceili Band and following speeches and awards continued late into the night with 7th Sense. The common view is that, despite the rain, this has been the most successful games to date.Again personal thank you to all who took part. We really came together as a club and the hard work over the past few months paid off. Let’s build on it for the future.John Campbell

I was gonna offer you a bribe to put a boot up the ass of a certain Irish ex-mod; but then I realized that from where you'd be on the field, your leg probably wouldn't be long enough!

Seriously, it sounds like a great event. And, yes, Singapore has a long-standing tradition of fielding great women's soccer teams.
