Dirty Hotels

Question

"SINGAPORE: -- Two hotels in Thailand tops the 2010 edition of TripAdvisor's list of the dirtiest hotels in Asia.

The site lists Phi Pho Don Chukit Resort as the filthiest, and First Hotel Bangkok as a good number eight.

Bad smells, unidentified splatters on walls, bed bugs and and bare wires hanging from light fittings are among the complaints left on travel website Tripadvisor.com about some of the places named on its annual 'Dirtiest Hotels' lists.

The ten dirtiest hotels in Asia, Canada, Europe, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States have been named in this year's lists, which were compiled based on reviews from unimpressed travellers.

Phi Phi Don Chukit Resort in Thailand took the dubious honour of being named dirtiest hotel in Asia.

"I don't think I can say anymore than this is the worst place I have ever stayed in my whole entrie [sic] life," one person wrote.

"Cockroaches...smelly.......yuk! Never ever stay here unless...well no...never ever stay here!!!"

Another review was entitled "Ruined our holidays, Disgusting place, terrible service".

Last year's Asia list specified that it also covered the Pacific region though it's not clear whether that is also the case this year.

A number of hotels named in the latest round-up of squalid accommodation have also been singled out in the past.

First Hotel Bangkok was deemed the dirtiest hotel in Asia last year but has dropped to number eight on this year's list.

Two London hotels named among the three worst in the United Kingdom last year - the Cromwell Crown and the Corbigoe Hotel - were again named among the 10 dirtiest in both the UK and Europe.

After the Cromwell topped last year's UK list it was visited by a reviewer from the Times, who concluded that it wasn't just the worst hotel in Britain but possibly "the worst hotel in the world".

However it was surpassed in the filth stakes this year by the Grosvenor Hotel in Blackpool, which was named the dirtiest in Europe.

"The room we stayed in was a minger," read one review from a person who claimed it was the worst hotel they'd stayed in for 20 years.

"Room hadn't been cleaned for ages, curtains / sheets were scruffy, tv didn't work, shower was covered in mould and ceiling tiles were collapsing," it continued.

The Grosvenor's proprietor, Chirag Khajuria, told local news website The Gazette he felt the reviews left on Tripadvisor were "unfair".

TripAdvisor.com are an operating company of Expedia, Inc. and listed on the Nasdaq Exchange (NASDAQ: EXPE)."

I picked a hotel in Seville, Spain once because several people posted reviews hating the place. They complained that despite the hotel being very nice they were woken up every morning by drunk guests returning from all-night partying. Since i planned to be one of those drunks it sounded perfect :-)

Seriously though, some of the people on TA are idiots. Guys booking into 2 and 3 star hotels and bitching and moaning about how everything wasn't up to 5 star standards.

Now that's a good one! Is Europe close to Austria? Do I as a Schengen member citizen need a visa to go there? Which train to take from Italy to Europe and is the currency of Europe convertible to the Euro? Does Europe have nice beaches or should I better go again to France? At least I hope that the European kitchen is better than the one in UK!

I read tripadviser hotels reviews a fair bit and I find it funny how some people can rave about a hotel and others say it's not so good!!!!!

I guess it's all up to the individual and you only get what you pay for!!!!!!

I use it quite often too and find it helpful at times, although you do get your fair share of moaning bastards who are never happy giving bad ratings for the silliest of things.

Example.....I was looking into a hotel for my trip to Egypt, 5 star all inclusive and looked the biz. Most reviews were 4 or 5/5 but one reviewer gave it a 1/5. Her complaint was (and it totally RUINED the whole families holiday) the EGYPTIAN hotel did not serve chips which my kids eat every day, what are they supposed to eat?? she went on, ruined the entire holiday and would not recommend !

There must have been around ten fookin restaurants in the place, serving cuisine from all around the world.....except fuckin chips

Arse.....rant over :D

Whilst on my second trip to Thailand (the naive but more adventurous period) I booked the following hotel in Bangkok from Phuket on the internet.

http://www.psi-promenade.com/05fun.html

It looked quite good on the net, but f#ck was I in for a shock !!!

I chose the hotel, because of it's "Sports Facilities" as I learned from my first trip that gyms in BKK are more expensive than Melbourne.

I think I booked 5 nights, but only stayed one night. The room had dirty carpets, the vile smell of smoke and I could hear a German bloke banging his Nana date in the next room (thin walls).

The bed sheets didn't look too good, so I slept on the doona fully clothed, just in case.

The "gym" was just a run down multi-station home gym, the outdoor swimming pool, a small puddle of water which was like the great barrier reef of bacteria.

When I told the receptionist the bad news that I had to quickly go back to Australia for business, she politely asked for my credit card and refunded the remaining 4 nights, less a small administration fee.

She had done it so quick, I could only imagine how many times she's processed a refund.

I think I'm quite tolerant and don't think of myself as a fussy kind of person, but this hotel was the second worst place I ever had to sleep in.

Here's a link to someone who gave a **** and wrote a review about the hotel ; http://reviews.metroguide.com/d.asp?pi=32641

The worst place was a cock-roach infested **** hole in Queensland during schoolies week in 1988. That night, to avoid sleeping in the room, I did a compulsory all-nighter, and slept on the bus to Sydney the next day :P

I have used TA in the past too, and found the postings helpful in describing a truer atmosphere in and around the hotel (all the hotels find a way to over-sell themselves)...

for example may trip to Phuket in Oct-Nov was going to be at one of the Marriotts --- the discussions of the locations and the facilities were a big help with my decision---any upon visiting a couple of the those hotels I did not stay at (out of curiousity); thought they were quite accurate.

THIS LISTing is really funny, may none of us ever get stuck in places like they discribe... just give me a clean room good nights rest on a firm mattress -- it can be very modest and I am fine...I am not going to hang-out in the room anyway! :)
