primetime
Are there any Thai holidays such as Christmas or Chinese New Year where gifts are commonly exchanged? What gift giving protocol needs to be followed? What are common gift giving mistakes?
eagle
i can think of only two things we don't give out as a gift. it has to do with being superstitious. sharp instruments: scissors, knives, etc. --> they'll 'cut' friendship or relationship hankies --> the recipient will lose the loved one(s). so if u're giving those items to someone, u wanna take money from them like one baht or something so that they 'buy' it from u then there's no bad luck. and, unlike farangs, we don't open the gift in front of ppl who give it to us. not sure why..[/quote thanks Misty thats nice to know ]

okies
I once bought expensive perfume for Thai GF, she was not pleased due to she informed me that you don't buy that for GF because that is not for Lasting relation ship, she suggested me to buy 10Baht gold instead  Many different girls in Thailand Viggo. This wasn't in Pattaya by any chance was it? many (not all) girls in this city are mostly all about money... call them corrupt or something, I don't know. Anyways the reason that many Thais love gold is because it's a great "pawn" item... If in need for money, go right to the shop! but my personal opinion... 10 baht Gold is downright "!¤#%!"#"¤ You are not marrying her, it's just a gift. I've heard some stories the custom is to give the mother of the girl a "dowry" of either 5 or 10 (I've even heard 20) baht gold. to "buy" the girl out of her family
NigelBragg
I have read somewhere that there is a culture of gift-giving during Songkrans. If the gift is money, how much is considered normal or appropriate?
okies
depends on the relationship of that friendship... good friend, or just a friend? or just someone you barely know? I wouldn't give anything more than say 500 baht for a good friend. others... well around 200 should do the trick

dannyboy
just a little piece about the gold, in my local thai restaurant in my town the waiter and the chef got married to each other (both thai)and in terms of gold he gave her 1bhat and according to him that was more than enough. i dont know if we are getting the wool pulled over our eyes or what. he had no reason to lie to me we have been friends and drinking buddies for about 5 years,
