Many argument about this word, but I have heard a very plausible explaination.

When the Europeans came to Thailand to trade and colonize Asia, one of the first to establish an Embasy or such, made relations anyway... Were the French.

And you know most Thais pronouciation abillities, and french isn't exactly "easy" So french would call themselfs for "france" (sorry, don't know how that is written in French, sorry France)

Thais pronounced this name as: "Faranse". over the years it became "faran" to todays "farang"

the term farang/falang is ONLY used for white westerners of European and US countries.

If you are with a Thaiperson and if you say "farang" about... say... a chinese person (because you would think that farang means foreigner) then they would object to you.

Negros are sometimes ironicaly called "chocolate man"

Well I'm from Norway so since there aren't so many "blacks" here we call them by the "real" name, *****, just as whiteys are called caucasian. Nothing negative about it, NOT to be misinterpid as ni****

Not so diverse in Norway so we really don't call anyone white either 5555

if any "black" have been offended, then I'm sorry

come on now, those words was used by the Spanish during the colonial period, ***** meaning the color black... wich you want us to say, just a different language. And niger is latin for black...

It's the white Americans in the modern times that has perverted a completly common word, not the only word that has been perverted by white peoples... But that's not what this post is about.

Just a little insight in Norway, we call negros/blacks for "neger" nothing negative about it... For us it's just as normal to say "neger" as others say "asians". Even blacks in Norway refer themselsf as "neger". So sorry, but I had not negative thought of the word untill you mentioned it.

If you actually read my posts instead of leaping to justify/defend what you've written you'll see that I never said I took offense. In my dictionary quote it even says Etymology: Spanish or Portuguese, from ***** black. 3% of Afro Americans use the word to define themselves, so what? I'm not from America or Africa and last time I checked I was entitled to my own opinion.

All I said was "Ironically I'd rather be called a chocolate man than a *****... "

So take your patronising placation somewhere where it would be more appreciated, maybe the 1960s...

what did I do wrong?

Well I am labeling the Farang Thread as closed, I answered my thoughts of the word Farang, and that's it. no more posts in here.

Again, sorry if I offended anyone, I didn't mean too. Adn what patronizing? I'm not even an American, I'm like most Europeans, I actually despies the country (not the people), and I wasn't even alive in the 60s, so I don't know anything about that.

This case closed and we all part as friends, how about that?

This is a friendly site to get to know other persons, not to open dabates, agreed?

A wide-spread belief in Thailand is that the word "farang" (Caucasian) is derived from the French word "francais". This derivation is implausible on phonetic and historical grounds. It is in fact a popular misconception. It is true, however, that these words have the same ultimate source.

The word is attested in various forms in languages in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. It is clear that the word originated as "Frank" in Europe and spread eastwards along Muslim trade routes.

Thais most likely borrowed the word from influential Muslim Persian or Indian traders in the 17th century or even earlier. The Persian word was "farangg". The term probably was used to refer to early Portuguese traders and subsequently to all Europeans (ie., non-Muslims).

It is possible that the Thai word "farangset" ("French") is a blend of the word "farang" and the French word "francais", ie., "farangset" is actually derived from "farang", not vice versa. Certainly, the word "farang" existed prior to, and independently of, "farangset".

****** is an extremely controversial term used in many English-speaking countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia (but also in other countries where English is spoken such as Germany) to refer to people of African descent. During the chattel enslavement of Africans, it was once the standard, casual English term for black people. Associations with the word traditionally have been an institutional contempt, a presumption of inherent inferiority, even of bestiality, making it extremely pejorative and abusive.

Historically, African Americans have appropriated the slur, subverting it to a self-referential term that is often suggestive of familiarity, endearment, or kinship. When spelled phonetically, the word often was represented as nigguh; however, currently, when used in this manner, the spelling is often changed to ****** or niggah. All, however, have accepted the original term as being racist and dehumanizing. Generally, ****** is considered a highly offensive racial epithet, especially when used by non-blacks

Better being called a Chocolate Man then a ******

You despise America but not the people? That's a load of half baked BS. What don't you like? The landscape? The climate? The industry?

People make up a country. To hate a country then you hate the people. Just remember; If it wasn't for America you would be speaking German today.

I will point out that in Okies defence Norway is hardly a culturally diverse country. I think we are now showing more intolerance than he ever did with his post.

Whilst it was "ignorant" for want of a better word it was hardly malicious.

Turn the other cheek you yankee biatches :P

Yankee! Hey - they didn't even make it to the World Series this year! Now you have the New Yorkers pissed! Oh - you didn't mean those Yankees :P

That could be right. When I first came to Thailand I noticed the word "farang" resembled our Hindi word for foreigner "firangi". Possibly a modified version of what we use.

Not always that bad country = bad people you know?

Even Thailand has some very bad political stuff, but we all Love Thais don't we?

And don't go about with history ok? even you have some dark pasts too.

I got some examples but I don't want another debate where I am again pulled down as the bad guy.

I tihnk every American on this site would agree with you that their government could improve quite a bit. So in the sense we agree. But then again - we all know that Europiean governments and politicians are just perfect now aren't they  How about not coming across so arrogant.

I make it a point never to say anything bad about another persons country. I take the time to consider how people may feel about their homeland. There are many things I can say about other countries but I keep them in check because I don't want to offend others.

Of course, people have the right to speak their minds. When they do they need to be open for some replies.

America having a dark past? Yes. What countries don't? Bring them up if you choose. That will open a whole new debate.

crap, who said we was perfect? I never said that... But you must realize that for foreign nations the view we get from a country is mainly from the government and politicians. That is what the Europeans don't like... heche... don't like the country but the people are ok. Since the people itself are discontent with the governmant. That alone kinde proofs that I am half right, yes?

That's not what this Thread is about. So I don't even want to say anything. Since I don't want any discussions.

Sure many countries have a bloody past, mostly every nation got them. But some last had them several hundred years ago, while some had it... well just a few years ago.

Well I am labeling the Farang Thread as closed,

It's a forum -- the whole point IS debate. And I have yet to see anybody "label" a thread closed, except when it gets locked out. So you'll just have to live through this controversy you've stirred up. Good luck with all that!

Again, sorry if I offended anyone, I didn't mean too.

I think rather than a "sorry" -- most people offended here would just be happy if you'd learn from what they are trying to tell you instead of just taking a defensive stance. SInce you've now offended blacks, whites, Americans, non-racist Norwegians, and probably a few others, you have a lot of learning to do.

True story: I'm from a very tiny logging town in Canada. I think we invented the word "racism" through our general ignorance. Case in point, when somebody was cheap, we would say "You jew!" or "You jewed me!" I use the small "j" because we didn't even know that jew = Jewish. There just aren't many Jewish loggers, I guess, so I didn't know any (As Cartman from "South Park would say, "There aren't any Jews in Canada, Kyle!"). In fact, I didn't even question the use of that phrase until I made my first Jewish friend here in Japan and made the connection.

While my ignorance of the term "jew" can be forgiven to some extent when I was 10, to defend its use now by saying "Well, I don't really mean anything by it -- It's just a word we use in Canada" would be insensitive to Jewish people, and probably get me yellow carded on TF  . As it should.

Don't defend your ignorance. Learn from it. LISTEN to and learn from the explanations and feelings of the people who are offended, since that is the best way to "get to know other persons" as you wrote in your post.

Anyway, just a suggestion. OK, NOW the forum is closed.:lol:
