As most of us have witnessed (or participated in) some newbies get a real thrashing when they first post on TF. Not all do, of course, but some. I'm not talking about he 1st journals that simply say "hi, I'm new here" ...those are generally met with open arms and well-wishing from the masses....

I'm talking about the "hey everybody look at me and how spectacularily wonderful I am" or the "hey everybody, look at my "insert random body part" isn't that the most shocking thing you have ever seen?" type posts.

Do these characters deserve a little leeway(sp)? Should we back off because they're new? or should we jump all over em, stomp them till the cry 'mommy', with the hopes that only the strong will survive?

It seems to me that when you join a group....and you really have no clue about the existing dynamics of that group, you should tread lightly, learn the ropes, slowly initiate yourself into the fold, and THEN stand up and say "look how wonderful I am and how shocking I can be"

ps...discuss without names....

There are certainly two sides to this. The community can be guilty at times of ganging up on newbies, but mostly this happens when they do come crashing into the room, shouting their heads off, or simply just saying something that dosn't quite fit with the current mood of the community. They may be forgiven for not realising what response they will get, but it is normal social behaviour to enter a group with open ears, eyes and mind, and a less open mouth. If they enter in a different way, they they can expect what is coming to them. It might be ugly, but it's entertaining.

Interestingly it tends to be just guys who get trampled. Maybe girls know better how to be discrete, at least in the beginning....

I quite like this. She usually says stuff that annoys the hell out of me, so I can take a couple of jabs and a left hook at her non-mod persona without fear of any added yellow colour being dripped onto my profile

By the way, I also have 2 profiles. I'm actually Satyrion. Like my nails?

And now back to our regularly scheduled topic...

When I first joined (I'm still wet behind the TF ears) I didn't post for a long time. And when I did, I was very careful not to make any waves, or even ripples. I left that up to FB2, Plutonium, Zeus and Ciaran ;)

I think this current issue is the result of a few recent high-profile idiot newbies who not only have been abusive in forums and journals, but have also ignored the advice of people advising them to sit back and get to know the TF culture before spewing off at the keyboard.

Do these characters deserve a little leeway(sp)? Should we back off because they're new?

As far as I'm concerned, once people have been warned and chosen to ignore the sage advice of their TF brethren, then it's time to take the kid gloves off and educate them through more direct means.

Show no mercy and let the thrashing begin!

Yes, in some cases, they should. It's worked in the past here on TF. And it will work again.

Not to mention any names, but I've seen newbies who start posts in their first week that just beg for abuse, and they get plenty. It winds up blowing up and everybody gets involved. Finally, the newbies start to ask older TFers, "Why is everybody such an a**hole here?" And at some point, when told, "Errr..actually, the a**hole is you, buddy," they figure it out, and become reformed good-guys. So once again, I repeat. Let the thrashings begin!

the fact that she thinks i am "brown nosing" only proves that she has no friggin clue about my history here on TF....the fact that you seem to be applauding her rather inaccurate comment only proves you are the one "brown nosing....her"

It was 2unique who said that to you, wasn't it?

No surprise there!

Hey, 2Unique has said far worse that that to me! I can't say exactly, or I'd get banned and he'd get arrested.
