sunsnow
Ah, from Asia Post (on front page of Journals currently): " The coup significantly comes against the backdrop of a hotly contested scheduled military reshuffle, in which Thaksin had controversially vied to elevate army officials loyal to him from his pre-Cadet Class 10 to the pivotal First Army Division. That reshuffle list reportedly brought Thaksin into conflict with senior members of the top brass and the Privy Council, and his refusal to back down from the proposed personnel changes appears to have been a major factor behind the coup." Yup, for the love of Thai people right...let's have a coup. This is honest inquiry: I am interested to know what laws Thaksin actually broke to get ousted illegally and undemocratically? He circumvent the same laws against foreign ownership as those other companies that are now currently under investigation (as a possible smoke scren)? Or he did not pay taxes? Because I am not finding foreign commentary that says anything about what he actually in the end broke. Comments are that he broke "moral laws" and he did unethically maybe, but did not break actual laws or so on? MikeAussieGuy? I know to ask about you because you have shown deep interest in this matter. Nevetheless, I guess most people agree that this kind of military thing is hurting and setting back Thailands try to be democratic. The change should be democratic. EDIT: Arrived to Helsinki, felt that I missed out to say that Thaksin, what a power hungry crazy person he is! Sure he has majority vote but come on, he hlmself said that there is coup plans a week or two ago, and knows that there is big minority who opposed and everything, really lost his face imho...He really didn't have anymore the TRUST that is needed in general. BUT noooo, guy clinges to power untill the bitter end. NOW, his party and opposition parties BETTER FIND GOOD ALTERNATIVES FOR HIM! Military knows better that they can't rule and don't want to become military dictatorship. Peace out, let there be no bloodshed.

sunsnow
http://bangkokpost.com/breaking_news/breakingnews.php?id=113045 "The Asian Human Rights Commission is gravely disturbed by this takeover of power," said the commission. "It has no place in Thailand at a time that parliamentary democracy, despite difficulties, was maturing and taking root." The coup-makers have pledged to return power to the people as soon as possible, although their decision to abolish the 1997 constitution suggests it will take months, if not a year, before a new one can be drafted The New York-based Human Rights Watch has been highly critical of Thaksin during his five years in power, especially of his so-called "war on drugs" in 2003 during which an estimated 2,000 suspected drug traffickers were killed, many of them in extrajudicial executions. The human rights group has also condemned Thaksin's policies in the deep South, where a separatist struggle has raged since January, 2004, leaving 1,700 dead and many "dissapearances" of suspects under emergency decree rule in the three-provinces bordering Malaysia. "Molempi pahempi"? Thaksin has bad human rights record.( But so does military coups. Military says this will be peaceful, AND yeah, Thailand has hade quite a lot quite peaceful coups ) Comparing what happens currently in Budapest, Hungary...

He said he agreed to accept to become Prime Minister. Nonetheless, it was expected that there would be a press conference at the Arm Force auditorium today. Really? sunsnow
From 2bangkok.com forum (I like the site: it covers a wide area of subjects, mass transit etc.) Scuba22 writes IMO quite well, wanting for Thai PEOPLE to come as "winners", not neither side of the coup: "I suppose we're in for a barrage of "democracy in peril" stories, as if Thaksin was some kind of paragon of democratic ideals. I hope somewhere the story comes out how this is really a battle between two personality cults, one using the rhetoric of electoral politics and free markets, the other using the rhetoric of religion and tradition while both pander to nationalism. But neither really cares much about the substance behind the rhetoric, using promises of salvation, whether material or spiritual, to command a following in order to increase their own stature. There are no good guys here - but IMHO, the current coup is a more honest reflection of Thailand's political rot, and therefore is preferable to the Thaksin administration which was more able to hide its authoritarianism under a veneer of electoral victory and liberal rhetoric. In truth, neither side is really democratic in that neither is really interested in the people governing themselves. With the military/palace alliance at least this is obvious. Thaksin, for his part, ignores the civil liberty and checks-and-balances aspects of self-rule, creating instead a majoritarian dictatorship. I'd say the biggest immediate issue is placating Thaksin's supporters upcountry. I hope this means an accounting of what he and his cronies have really been doing these past few years (similarly, an accounting of the Bush crew's actions would be nice to see). Of course this will be politically motivated, but perhaps ti might also be accurate. I'll be very interested to hear the Thaksin apolgists take on the evidence as it emerges. For the longer term, I don't think this coup makes much difference to Thailand's political, social or economic development. All of these are a disaster and has been so for a long time, though covered up by different layers of hype, supported by Thailand's immense natural wealth. The military is just as likely to institute real democratic change as was the TRT, IMO. This is a step sideways into the light - not forward or backward. " http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/showthread.php?t=1872&page=10 No comment on this. BUT check out the forum thread there: look user Wisarut postings: they are weird and full of translation errors. he/she is most probably using some thai sources, and most of the stuff is unconfirmed, like saying that Thaksin is already in London while everyone else is saying he is still in US. Seems that the stuff (if it is translated) is (very) much "pro-coup propaganda"? Does anyone else follow this thread at 2bangkok.com? (infact, his information seems to be part true, part very accurate and much faster than english media...dunno what this person is using as sources...Thaksin is in London now according to BKK post and this poster "knew" about it earlier?)
