there has been so many great sporting memories

Wilkinsons last minute kick to beat the Aussies in the Rugby WC final

Beating the Aussies in the last Ashes series.

Kelly Holmes winning gold in 800m at 2004 olympics (no Aussie qualified for the final)

But the my favorite has to be watching the 1999 FA cup semi final replay, Arsenal v Manchester United

The game had everything amazing atmosphere, great goals, dubious ref decisions (Anelka goal & Parlour offside) Sending off Roy Keane  , Bergkamp missed penalty and THAT goal by Giggs.

A great night of true British football.

So whats your sporting memory

Sadly, and I'll cop a bit over this, was in fact Watkins field goal to beat the Aussies in the last World Cup that you mentioned. But obviously for different reasons than you remember it.

The try saving tackle of George Gregan on Jeff Wilson as he crossed the try line which won the Bledisloe Cup in 1994 against the Kiwis, the kick by John Eales from the sideline right on full time to win the Bledisloe Cup in 2000, again against the Kiwis.

John Eales at 6 foot 7 inches running down the English halfback with the try line wide open right on the bell which won the World Cup for Australia in 1991.

Australia winning the Americas Cup, I remember that as if it was yesterday.

So many great moments came to mind when typing this.

In 1984 Newcastle getting promoted to the old division one away to Huddersfield a 2-2 draw, everyone running on the pitch after the final whistle, with fully grown men all skipping over a giant black and white scarf.

Keegans first game V QPR, my first ever match, a streaker with only iluminous socks ran onto the pitch put a scarf round his neck and give him a kiss just as the second half was about to kick off.

Keegan scored we won 1-0, with 36,000 geordies going mental, watching that video of the terraces sends a shiver down my spine, footballs just not the same anymore.

Apparantly the police auctioned the socks.

have to agree with 2Unique, EURO 96 and THAT summer was magical in England.

there was belief beyond beyond imagination and THAT 4-1 win over Holland was amazing and who will forget Gazza's nearly golden gaol in the semi's.

but for me my greatest sporting memory was Liverpools's champions league win in Istanbul against AC Milan.

the totally domination by Milan in the first half with 3 goals and the lacklustre performance by Liverpool would have led you to believe it was enevitable for Milan to win.

but the second half witnessed one of the greatest comebacks in football history, to fight back to 3 -3 and then to win on penalties is now legendary.

Steven Gerrard, i love you like no other man should..........

1992 World series, Toronto Blue Jay's, the only non USA (Canadian) baseball team to win a world series won in the 11th inning of game 6 when Dave Winfield hit a 2 out double. People were streaking naked through the streets of Toronto, and the police just let it go. What a mad house Canada was, coast to coast!!!

...Linford Christie, gold medal, Barcelona.......brought British athletics to the threshold of world domination............for a while.....

.......Joe Calzaghe holding the world crown with six less title defences than the all time record holder Joe Louis..........but that's under the carpet for some reason?????? ...is it 40-0, or 42-0, ......no-one's paying attention where it matters so let's hope he beats Manfredo and get's the recognition a British boxer of his calibre is due???????

Unfortunately for Calzaghe, hes never had anyone in his class to have a great sporting moment.

Benn v Eubanks 1 was thoroughly entertaining, Benn v Mclelland would have been the greatest ever British title fight, until he got brain damaged, but nothing beats in boxing beats Bruno hanging on to Oliver Mccall for 6 minutes to win the world heavyweight title.

From sporting events I was actually present at:

Roberto Duran winning the lightweight championship of the world, knocking out Ken Buchanan at Madison Square Garden in June 1972.

Roberto Duran's first fight in New York, a 66 second first-round knockout of "Bang Bang" Benny Huertas at Madison Square Garden in September 1971. No one knew who he was when he stepped into the ring. Sixty six seconds later 20,000 people were asking "Who the hell was the kid?"

A sensational diving catch by Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates inthe right field corner of Shea Stadium off the bat of Cleon Jones of the NY Mets in the first game of a Sunday double header in September 1970. Greatest catch I ever saw.

Muhammad Ali stopping Floyd Patterson on cuts at Madison Square Garden in 1972.

An unforgettable double play by Andy Stankiewicz, Mike Gallego and Don Mattingly at Yankee Stadium in 1991.

Tiger Woods coming from nine strokes down on the final day of the Johnnie Walker Classic to defeat Ernie Els in a playoff at Blue Canyon Country Club in Phuket in January 1998. The greatest comeback of his career.

Sporting events I saw on television:

Joe Frazier beating Muhammad Ali in a 15 round decision at Madison Square Garden, March 8, 1971. Easily the greatest heavyweight championship fight of all time.

Marvin Hagler knocking out Tommy Hearns in the three most exciting rounds of boxing I ever saw in 198??

Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson in Tokyo for the heavyweight championship in one of the greatest upsets of all time.

The New York Mets, the worst team in baseball for the first eight years of their existence, winning the 1969 World Series from the Baltimore Orioles.

Roberto Clemente leading the Pittsburgh Pirates in winning the 1971 World Series from the Baltimore Orioles.

The New York Rangers winning the Stanely Cup in June 1994, with the Rangers-Devils series the pinnacle of hockey history.
