I recently bought a Canon Ixus 850 and I quite like it to take snapshots. The only other brand I looked at was Leica with their D-LUX 3 as it's the only compact camera which can capture RAW and can be operated manually. At the end I went for the Canon as it is smaller and the reason I wanted to buy a compact camera is to have it always with me (it's small enough to put in my pockets).

dpreview offers a good tool where you can input all your requests (like maximum price, how many megapixels you want, ...) and it then tells you all camera's that have those features :

I use a Canon 350 for professional shooting...I love it...but it is heavy and big.

Funny! I used the 350 a couple of times and I think it's a great camera, the only objection I had about it was that it's just too small for my hands and to light to hold stable... It feels like a toy imho (but then again, I'm used to a much bigger and heavier camera).

get a disposable Kodak they are cheap and you would be very supprised.

My friend back in 86 took underwater photos of dolphins with one of those

they can take decent pix. the problem vs digital is that in the long run, if you shoot a lot, they're more expensive than a cheap little point and shoot.

as to the OP: which camera you should buy depends on your shooting habits. RAW files are not necessary if you don't do any' 'post production' on your pics.

the option to set exposure and aperture manually is a GREAT option--if you a) know how to use it and B) shoot in low light, backlit subjects, etc. if you don't know what i'm talking about skip it.

SMALL SIZE is also important; the whole point of a point-and-shoot is that it's inconspicuous and you'lll always have a camera with you.

i use an old canon a70 for my main point and shoot. it's a tiny bit bulky but that's because it takes AA batteries, a nice feature if you travel and don't want to fish around for a place to charge your 'special' camera batteries.

don't know how thtey are currently but my canon has manual exposure and aperture, but is a bit on the fragile side. it's been repaired twice.

the leica mentioned elsewhere in this thread probably takes great pics but will be expen$ive.

im buying a new camera within the next week

Go for it dude. We don't judge on here.

 are you sure you're logged into TF???

Get one of those newfangled cameras with a built in phone.

the one that makes movies, holograms, plays mp3s, has a built in supercomputer, and even wipes your ass after you take a dump. they only cost twice as much as all those gadgets purchased separately...
