khun_lung
For me, I tend to lose weight up to a point and then it stabilizes. But I have friends who love Thai food more than Western food and they have balooned up a lot! I think it's different for different people, just like anywhere. CocoaBrotha
Though I've been told that Thai food can be somewhat salty, I never noticed, that is until I got home, and I Looked in the mirrior and saw a big belly.

MisterMatlock
Think about it... Loads of super-refined white rice (chocked full of starch, which converts to glucose, which, if not used by your body converts directly into body fat)... All food is fried (loads of fat both saturated and unsaturated)... Loads of alcohol (converts to glucose, and also raises estrogen levels which lowers the body's ability to burn calories)... Salt just causes your body to retain water which makes you look bloated... All of this can be found in a grade 9 science textbook.

How many asians do you see eating very small meals and snacks multiple times throughout the day... And to think our moms said eating "three squares" a day was the healthiest way to do things... Don't forget my point about alcohol.

Don't forget my point about alcohol. White rice isn't super refined. That's cake. But it is milled, which means it has the husk removed. While most of the nutrients such as fibre are contained in the husk, or the bran layer, white rice contains the same amount of carbohydrate, nearly as much protien and actually less fat. A Common misconception about eating starchy carbs is that it makes you put on weight. But you would have to eat an enormous amount for it to turn into body fat. You have to eat carbs as they are where you body gets energy from, and essentially, all carbs are sugars anyway. Either simple or complex. A likely reason Asians are generally of a more moderate weight than westerners is that they eat intuitively i.e when they are hungry and stop when they are full. So, yeah I think the '3 square meals a day' theory is rubbish too.

So, yeah I think the '3 square meals a day' theory is rubbish too. I agree about the rice comment... But the BIGGEST part about refined white rice IS the fact that the husk is removed. This takes pretty much ALL the fibre away from the rice. Without the fibre, people can eat it a LOT more of it. I've resorted to taking fibre caplets (psyllium) with meals to get some fibre since a good deal of the "thai diet" is low in it. One more thing, to say there are NO "overweight thais' would mean this person isn't around thai children much. While the "weight problem" here in Thailand is nowhere near the scale of the one in North America, there are still a LOT of very overweight children. I'm thinking they've been exposed to a good dose of western fast food as well as soft drinks.
zeusbheld
bottom line is a) the only proven way to gain more weight is eat/drink more calories, only proven way to lose more weight, eat/drink fewer calories, full stop. beer was invented to store calories a+b=fatass farrangs
