Hi,

I couldn't find anything on diving in the forum, whereas I did notice a number of TF members who mentioned diving in their hobbies?

Thailand has execelent places to dive, but how to chose? Diving is a great way to make friends ;-)

Anyone interested in sharing dive experiences, tips on good sites, good dive shops and get in contact with buddies to go dive with?

Thanks,

Tom... diver of cource

Hi,

actually there are four areas of interest:

1. Andaman Sea

2. Gulf of Thailand

3. South of Thailand and

4. The Similans

In general diving in the Andaman Sea is much better than in the Gulf of Thailand. Better visibility and more dive sites make it a better deal.

Hin Daeng and Hin Mueang are also worth a trip. Liveaboard trips start from Phuket island.

The Similans are always worth a liveaboard trip.

If you are in for tech rec, trimix or whatever deep diving, Phuket is the island of your choice, too. There is a handful of reputable dive shops offering tech diving and there are some deep spots worth diving.

If you want to combine a calm holiday with good day trips you should have a look at Khao Lak, Phang Nga province. Many hotels have re-openend again after the Tsunami and it aint far to the Similans.

If you love longer liveaboards you should consider diving Burma Banks, but those trips are not a bargain.

My next trip will be January/February 2008 for four weeks but I havent scheduled anything yet. There are several good dive shops on Phuket. I usually dive with Diveasia or Seebees. There are always good divers on the boat. So dont worry if you are alone. You will always have a good buddy. Of course it depends on your capabilities. I usually dive with divers of the same skill level and I love the deep stuff.

Regards

Ray

Thanks for the relpies so far!

I'm planning a trip in Octber / November, though I probably won't be in Thailand all the time, also considering Malaysia and / or Vientman.

I'm Rescue diver (PADI) and considering to take up some specialties, mainly to have some extra training... considering nitrox (as a step up to tech diving).

Which places are good for wreck diving? And for cave diving? (I've done 1 cave dive in Dominican Republic and would like to do some more of this).

Phuket is pure recreational diving, nothing spectacular but not too bad either. Forget Vietnam - why have all the American GIs explored Thai waters in Pattaya and Phuket ? Langkawi/Malaysia is supposed to be good, but have never been there.

Nitrox - it is mainly about making an extra buck. I started Nitrox in 1996 with IANTD, long time before PADI even thought about Nitrox and dove a lot on it, especially German Fleet diving at Scapa Flow / Scotland and in german lakes. Cant tell much of a difference to compressed air.

If its supposed to be great wreck diving, you gotta go to Truk lagoon, Micronesia or to Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands (dry suit only).

There are some wrecks round Pattaya in the 60m and deeper range and also some destinations in Phuket in 80 m range for Tec Rec.King Cruiser wreck is in a more and more bad state, that chinese steel is decomposing ever so quick, but not a bad wreck to visit. Boon Sung, this tin drencher- there are lots of species but not much left of the wreck.

Have a look at my friend Bens website - he is near Kata Beach Phuket. I dont get a single Bath commision, not even a beer for free, but he is competent and reliable if it is TecRec, TriMix or anything technical.

No caves afaIk - yes, at Koh Dok Mai, but that aint much of cave. Cant compare to the cenotes in Mexico or Florida.

Dive now - work later

Truk Lagoon is also on my agenda but not for now, I was diving with someone last year who told me about Truk and completely convinced me!

I'll check some of these sites, thanks for all the information...

By the way, these other sites in South East Asia have not been spoilt too much with the Tsunami I hope?

... Cherryberry... diving in the sea; bottle of air, bubbles, looking at some fish... that sort of diving...
