Then i would say it is a problem of perception and a problem of Thai society rather than the fault of the 'farang'. And I find the term 'farang' - (ie anything not Thai) a bit narrow minded and xenophobic when it refers to everyone and everything not Thai. I think you will find it is a problem of the Thai waiter rather than the foreigner who just went to eat or buy something. You are the ones that have the hi-so levels that expect and get more, not the travelling tourist or the expat.
lizardo
If the assistant walked away whilst serving me to serve someone else (regardless of race), because they thought that the other customer had more to spend then, depending on my mood, the assistant would be left in no uncertain terms (and anyone within 50 years and not deaf) that the manager's presence is required immediately, whereupon the manager, assistant and other customer would be embarassed beyond bellief, or I might just go and spend my money elsewhere. what if someone was centuries away...captain kirk? barbarella? bigKus
Morning,BigKus - take a look behind the curtains - there is a lot of shame to see. Swallow your pride or display it only when its indicated. And I would advise all those Thai using the word Farang, that many westerners find it extremely inappropriate, impolite and arrogant. Just my 2 bt. Ray Morning Ray, Thank you for your 2 bt. My aopologies to call you farangs just becuase if i call you something else ( foreigners, chao-tang-chart ) i afraid that noone would understand what da h*ck i talking about, not everyone smart here. :? dannyboy
Dear Forum Moderators,Kindly keep away some smartasses here who distroted the forum topic and can not look further ahead from their own d**ks. Thanks ------------------------------------- bigKus The chosen premium member and forum thread owner ;-) Without being rude, who do you think you are, someone special ? Yes, i think i m special and everyone can be a special themselve, so do you ( you can figure youselfe later what special you are, dont be shy ) Sorry to disillusion you but you're not special, you're ten a penny. You post something on a PUBLIC forum, don't like the answers, then have the audacity to complain about the replies you are receiving. Its true that i dont like some answers but its okay, what they answered here are represent themself in reality, let them spit their sh*t freely. So why complain then ? " The chosen premium member and forum thread owner "I'm premium, does that make me special with higher privileges than non- premium members ? I just STATE myself status here in the website, that it.. not require any privilege, you can do yours too. Why do you need to mention your status ? Premium and non- premium members' points are all valid. And also, how do you "OWN " a thread on a public forum ?Start yes, own NO. I own my thought, too bad it happened to be a topic of this forum thread, sorry said so, my bad :? You do own your thoughts, yes. for what they're worth. Everyday i face discrimination against me here in Thailand, do i start a thread every time something happens ? That is individual problems (mentioned before ), you have right to protect yourself from anyone who want to kick your d*ck If this is all you have to worry about then i envy you. Please stop complaining, grow up and shop somewhere else where they want your custom ......... I didnt complian any farangs here, just asking if they enjoy the privileges which they would sometimes provided by the waiter whome expected from to get a bigger tip ( but someone dont leave even a single baht coin ) Would it not be more pertinent to ask about the everyday discrimination "farangs" face here in Thailand, please believe me when i say i personally don't receive that many privileges. Funny enough though, i do get cheated a lot.....but who's complaining eh.....?........ And tipping, i leave that for Americans........

afook06
Reading this forum, I don't understand why Westerners or Caucasions have resentment to be termed a "Farang"? Isn't just a general term for a foreigner? I mean I consider myself a farang too, but I don't think I ever heard anyone really addressing me as a farang.......they usualy call me Mr or Sir.........so what's the big hangup about all of this? As far as being charged higher versas a local Thai, yes..this is wrong and what we all call discrimination..........but this is their country, and when in "Rome, do as the Romans .........we all still have the choice, either don't pay, and don't go.......not all airports charge an exit fee, but I don't see that stopping Farangs that wish to enter Thailand! Hey, we all win some and lose some........if the Thai people want to change all of this, then it's up to them, it's their country......we can either decide to stay or leave! Katoom
The word ferang in Thai eyes is no more derogatory than the word Asian is to Asians, it just sounds like it is to westerners.Or is "Asian" derogatory too? I don't see the connection with your comparison with 'Asian', really... But anyway, that was not my point and you are preaching to the converted here in Hong Kong. Of course I know that the word is accepted into the local vernacular, the same is the case here in HK for us 'Gwielo'. The funny thing is that I get asked if it upsets me all the time by local colleagues and friends, almost as if they are more concious of using the term than westerners are of hearing it. On the whole, we seem to be able to accept it far easier than the indigenous poulation.
beej
The sole reason for this forum thread was for Bigkus to sob about how some bird couldn't have the door opened for her because the waiter was too busy dealing with some western coustomers? Not at all. However, Farang refers to anything not Thai. Foreign - would be what Brits would refer to as anything not British, but I dont hear anyone in this day and age calling everyone not British as 'foreign' Therein lies the difference. Not about what is derigatory or not, it is simply an indication of how xenophobic the term can be.

That's why it more or less equates more to a word more akin to Asian(meaning eastern), than simply foreign. So please explain to me why I have heard Indians refered to as farang
Damnam1
It depends on in which context the word farang is used.Often it is used in a derogatory manner. This topic deals with lack of politeness, but the ones Bigkus blames are often the ones cheated. When we foreigners read between theThai lines, we understand that, especially the expats are tolerated in Thailand, at best accepted, but rarely integrated. One should focus that you better not slaughter the cow that provides the milk...

Check with your Thai friends. Ferang are white. Indians, specifically, are "kon India" or more generally "kon Asia" or " ᢡ" (which is also a term the recipients might not appreciate). Hey, I dont profess to be a Thai speaking expert. I have even heard Japanese food being described as farang food. But hey, what the heck.
