Well, seeing that your "response" does not address anything that I wrote, it's pretty obvious, despite problems with service in Thailand, that in this case there's a problem with the customer.

It's no wonder you get bad service.

drinking more beer does not make the girl really prettier, if that is what you are getting at.

It seems you are the one who did not read. I don't complain about traditional restaurants. Eating in a group we just order lots of dishes and eat them together, it hardly matters what comes first and last. There are hardly complains unless they manage to forget something.

When some restaurant offers more western food and suggests me to pick something from a variety of Appetizers then i don't need to adjust and meet them halfway, i simply can expect that my appetizer will come before the main dish and my bottle of water will not be forgotten.

That has hardly anything to do with culture. There are a plenty of people in Germany who will swallow a dry chewy steak and not complain, they will simply pay up and go home instead calling out the cook and asking why he served them a pair of fried shoe soles. Such people willeat their shoe and point with a finger at some table that will complain about the dry meat and say, " look at them, its so embarrassing"

You never have to adjust for obvious mistakes, you have to complain. I don't have to meet anyone halfway who expect me to pay up 100%. It is not my job to teach a waiter not to forget to bring my drink and the order of serving the appetizer, main dish and dessert.

There IS actually a sure fire way to get your starters before your main dishes in a Thai restaurant.

ONLY order your starters :D

When they arrive, just take a minute to order the main courses.

Can't fail. It DOESN'T fail.

As for bad service? waiters sitting around with a gormless look, not seeing you even though they are looking at you while you are waving your arms around like a madman, well - no tip. Plain and simple.

Good service - good tip.

Good tips + no tips averages out at a normal tip over time, so the ones who deserve them get the good ones, the ones who prefer to chat away with their friends whilst working get nothing.

Talking about thai restaurants, pubs and bars...

A couple of things never fail to piss me off sometimes.

I am that kind of people who will complain about the food if it does not match

my expectation and quality for the price and that goes for any kind of service.

i am not ask a driver or a cook to do me a favor, i PAY them.

- ordering drinks the waiter never can remember who ordered what and they never bother to ask when dishing them out, same goes for the food.

- having a romantic dinner is a pain... Happened so many times... they simply can not time the food so you can get it in about the same time, they even manage to serve you the dessert first and the appetizer after the main dish. So often someone had their food and you were wondering for 20 min how long it will take to finish your fried rice.

- Timing again... your got her food already and they tell you that they dont have some sh*t to make your dish and ask you to order something else.

- sitting in a small restaurant with more waiters pulling their nose at the counter than guests you have to wait 10 min for your bottle of water.

- 50 ml ice tea in a glassl stuffed with ice cubes.

- they never understand the meaning of DOUBLE. when you want a double portion of meat in your soup you will end up with 2 soups or 2 bills but not with double meat.

- they never write down what you order... i fail to count how often something was forgotten.

- in some places they have like 358 waiters taking care of your table, they will refill your drink after each sip... standing next to you and watching every movement they never mind to disrupt every romantic conversation or tab your shoulder while your kiss just to give you another ice cube.

- nose fingering

- 50 gram lamb steak for 1000 thb

Yes very funny, but you know reading helps in most cases.

As i wrote 2 times already i go with my thai GF or thai friends and i let them order.

But i am happy if the service matches your standard, good for you.

or maybe you explain the waiters in perfect thai in every restaurants the correct order of appetizer/main dish/dessert, teach them not to forget the things you ordered and give them a receipt your fav dish to make sure they make it yummy.

You've been here long enough to know I don't read what people say, esp when its more than 2 lines long.

I find that everything I order comes on time and just as I ordered it. Maybe because I keep it simple and don't mess around.

Then again it might just be because I go to the same 25 restaurants, the ones I know what to expect.

...I've been here four years and have never had a problem in any restaurant when ordering food....

.........In fact, eating in some of Bangkok's restaurants is a privelage and a pleasure.....

...Never heard of the dessert coming before the main course? Unless you ordered a Sundae with your Happy meal?

...Service is top quality in Bangkok, even in the local restaurants. In fact I go as far as to say that it's uber quality....when you have to tell waiters/waitresses that you can pour your beer yourself, you know that the service is good.

..Sounds to me like you are just complaining for the sake of it and disrespecting the hard working restaurant staff who earn pittance compared to other jobs and work their asses off 7 days a week....

...Your Banana split came before your chicken nuggets and chips....boo hoo

..probably because what you ordered had to go and be bought from Tesco's..

..They work hard and the service is excellent

...a bad customer always calls people fools ( to the tune of a 'bad workman'...)

lol, Dont expect me to take you serious.

Maybe if you Waltz in to a restaurant flicking your hair and giving them BLUE STEEL with a gaggle of picky tarts who want to change their whole menu then no.

...I'm not expecting anything?

...I'm just telling you how it is without my hands akimbo.

....It's all relative........I come from a place where service isn't in the dictionary and you get bottled if you don't leave a tip....

..no-one expects a tip in Thailand and the service is good....

...unless you dine in 5 star restaurants around the globe and are comparing the service to that of a river side restaurant in Bangkok.....

....why do people complain so much in Thailand?? Someone mentioned it earlier, that if you went into a local restaurant in Europe speaking Thai you wouldn't even get a seat....

..I see so many farangs really lose their patience over here for the smallest of reasons........there was a guy the other night in the 7 and he was getting angry with the staff because they didn't understand his mumbling bullshit, I couldn't even understand it...he started swearing....ridiculous.....

...(not on point, but relevant)

..Imagine if some foreigners came over to England and started complaining about their service on a website forum........they would be laughed at...

...I don't go round to people's houses and make a fuss, so I certainly wouldn't go to someone elses country and throw my rattle over a few service mistakes.

...what did you want people to do on this post? Agree with you?

"Yeah service is crap...yeah...yeah......er.....what else is crap...er..oh yeah...taxis...yeah...taxis are crap........oh and the paving stones are broken...yeah...they're crap...."

Start a revolution?. I'll vote for you in the general election under the headline....

.."I'll get your starter to you before your main course"

.."If there's no toilet paper in the men's room....use the bloody hose"

look, no point discussing anything here with you.

Obviously you didnt read past the first 2 lines as i already wrote 3-4 times with quotes that i only go dining with my thai GF or other thai friends and i let them order.

Smiling and being friendly is hardly the whole concept of what i call service.

cant recall i ever mentioned a river restaurant or a small local thai restaurant.

But even counting those in, in general the service in thailand is very friendly but very very unprofessional.

Yep, I pity anyone who has to wait on you.

maybe i'm wrong, but i think part of this is that thais traditionally tend to eat with all the dishes on the table at once or about the same time and they just take what they want in whatever order they want.

Look, even in places where you pay five times the price as in a small traditional restaurant (and that still wouldn't be very expensive) the staff is local and may have local ideas.

what would you call a restaurant that is five times more expensive than a SMALL thai traditional restaurant? Italian restaurant? or a big/expensive thai restaurant?

All the time you were talking about traditional ideas, and the traditional way of eating the thai food with all the dishes on a table where everyone simply share the food...

Well EXCUSE me for being stupid thinking that you might have been talking about thai restaurants.

in general the service in thailand is very friendly but very very unprofessional.

...So really what you are complaining about is personal standards about the professionalism of Thai restaurants.

...does your Thai girlfriend and your Thai friends who dine with you share the same opinion?

...Or are you using this thread as an exhaust because your gripes fall on deaf ears when you speak with nationals....

...I'm not being difficult, but I just disagree.....maybe you were expecting a wave of support but really when you're not on home soil, it's kind of rude to complain about things like "service". Especially when you have to accept that you are a guest.....and unfortunately the customer is not always right.

..Complaining about the way a country runs itself kind of reminds me of British colonials travelling abroad and complaining about the "bloody hot weather". Or the "ignorance of the natives".

...Service is a word...........not a globally identical modus operandi.

..I had to ask a second time for my chicken fried rice,

didn't really matter, the staff were nice,

If I were to complain, they wouldn't treat me the same,

and I'd have to ask for things alot more than bloody twice.

...beautiful

sure

you will be surprised how many Thai people expect an equivalent trade for their money.

...Or are you using this thread as an exhaust because your gripes fall on deaf ears when you speak with nationals....

of course not. There are always people who are not to shy to complain, but of course there are also people who will swallow and accept it, you for example.

i am not some guest who is asking for a favor, i am customer who pays for it.

and that is worldwide the very same.

..Complaining about the way a country runs itself kind of reminds me of British colonials travelling abroad and complaining about the "bloody hot weather". Or the "ignorance of the natives".

Excuse me? What kind of bullshit are you babbling about? Lets take the word quality and service and apply the same situation on some thai cloth tailor. When your get some crap that does not fit for your money i want to hear you say that again.

It is a common thing in thailand that people come to late for a meeting but as every stick has 2 ends those who end up waiting will not be happy, even if they are thai.

...Service is a word...........not a globally identical modus operandi.

of course you are right, its not identical as there are different standards everywhere but then again there are also different price classes and they suggest that you get a better service.

...I had to ask a second time for my chicken fried rice,

didn't really matter, the staff were nice,

If I were to complain, they wouldn't treat me the same,

Awesome, have a cookie!

I can not recall being rude to anyone in a restaurant and we sure ask for forgotten dishes till we get them, but it happens way to often and we are not happy about it.

just because people take it means not they like it.

Eating 30 THB noodle soup in a street restaurant i exactly get what i am expecting and i am happy with it.

Paying 1200 THB for some spit of lamb on some boiled spinach i expect to get it before my shrimp cocktail appetizer. Does that make me weird?

When i get a dirty glass and show it to the waiter, getting a very annoyed look in return and a straw instead of a fresh glass... thats sick of me to complain about it right?

Maybe i should do the same as most thai ladies who would eat lunch on in a street restaurant, take out a tissue and clean my plate and spoon first then get my own green tea out of the bag instead of complaining.

besides getting your dish to late is just one point i mentioned in my first post but seems it the only thing you managed to read. It sure is not the main problem.

But all the small things together happen very often and are annoying.

if you are happy with them, congratulations!

I can live with them, but i am not so happy about it.

besides, it is fun to complain

...every word coming out of your mouth after saying that only extenuates your credibility....

....You are obviously one of those people in restaurants who enjoys making a spectacle of themselves....or has no real conversational skills and spends the whole meal using observational cues to try and start a conversation..

..."Look at what he's wearing!..." or "I asked for three ice cubes not four"

...Someone who says it's fun to complain is his own judge, jury and executioner.....

...................Court adjourned

...but...wait.....it's fun to hear what you have to say.

Excuse me? What kind of bullshit are you babbling about? Lets take the word quality and service and apply the same situation on some thai cloth tailor. When your get some crap that does not fit for your money i want to hear you say that again.

...We're talking about having to wait for food in a restaurant, or getting your starters before your main course..........don't be facetious, it may suit your photo but it doesn't suit your prose.

I bought a car yesterday and it fell apart when I got in it....but the service was so good I surely couldn't of complained. Food, restaurants, patience, manners...that's what we're talking about.

I can live with them, but i am not so happy about it.

...Live with it then.....this is what I'm talking about.....got nothing better to say so you nit pick about the "short comings" of Thailand's professionalism in service.

...If you don't like it don't do it......but you'd rather do it and complain about it afterwards....which is a clear sign that you are a spoilt brat...

...probably breast fed until 10 years old and have had the moon on a stick and a silver spoon up your ass for most of your life. So next time you're having a manicure, think about the "other people" who don't really give a shite if the "appetizers" are a little late.

Awesome, have a cookie!

gosh, thats the lames thing you get to hear but sadly you hear it everywhere. You can go to USA or germany, you will hear people say the same crap.

Bla, if you don't like it here, why u come here in the first place, bla, go back.

Mostly you get to hear it from other foreigners with a small wanna be patriotism complex. They may have a hard time to find acceptance as a local but they try hard.

The more you hit a spot the angrier people get, they hardly would say a thing if you would complain about things that do not apply.

Of course everything is great, the air, the service quality... even the characteristic streets have their dreamy atmosphere and will come handy when you turn blind one day as they are easy to remember.

The locals love the streets, love the motorcycle drivers who steal their hand bags, love the rusty BBQ grills that never get cleaned, love the politics. love us the foreigners who complain, and we foreigner love each other too, and the bargirls and everything else, its all natural and complaining about it is pointless anyway, right? what can a single men do? nothing of course.

I am the same as you in many aspects, for other things than the food i resigned for a long way already and i get pissed if other foreigner complain about it, i say the same.

Its normal that people come to late, its because of the traffic so STFU. streets are fine, they try hard and renew them slowly. The collapsed bridge was not corrupted, was just old. The Tuk Tuk is fine, they have to charge more, they have to make a living and so on and so on.

I complain here about food, i like to complain when i am bored and i could complain all day long if i had the time to kill. I love to discuss, even if it is pointless, no big deal. Welcome to internet.

But be assured, i am always friendly to people in person, i never swear at a waiter or his boss who underpays him. i ask and remind them in a friendly way as often as it takes till i get what i want.

BUT to simply say, bla why the hell all the stupid foreigners have to complain all the time, you make it way to easy for yourself.

People usually never complain without a reason. and you may keep in mind that the locals complain a lot to, but they hardly will come and complain about it to you my dear foreign friend. Remind yourself that the population here is not sabai sabai with every **** that is going on. (not talking about the food)

It seems to me you have a great deal of fun bitching about what i have to complain.

So be your own judge.

So, getting a car that does not fall apart is not a part of a service?

getting my car to late is Bad service for me and getting a broken car with a smile does not make the service any better.

you are hard to read English_George, not the content but the way you try to be funny.

You fail at this point badly.

I hate to generalize but the only joke i git from all english guys i met in BKK was :

"Where are you from? "

- germany

"Oh, i am sorry for you!"

But i failed to get that one too.

seems your humor is so dry that it stuck in your arse or something.

And i thought my humor and sarcasm was hard to read.

..Discuss is what people do who have more important things to do than complain...

...Complain is what people do who have nothing to discuss...
