Katoom
There are not many things I don't care for but here in Hong Kong it has got to be Moon Cakes. In all honesty, I just don't get it with those things. And get this, the Chinese overthrew the Mongolians in the 14th century by passing messages in Moon Cakes as the Mongolians hated them as much as me so never ate them. Like eating a pastry encrusted sand bar and they give me lock jaw just looking at them, gopping... Whats yours?
PJack
God Damn I HATE those things. I keep trying every once in a while. Someone says, you have not tried Durian Mooncakes, and so I have to try a bit. HATE THEM!!!! I loved your description : cakes of pastry encrusted sand. yeah. Sometimes to me they seem like they are all egg yolk and a bit of sugar (not enough) and some damn beans. wtf? It just goes to show you that Chinese are insane... and possibly not human. tonyP
PLAA (I'm sure someone can correct my spelling or translate to Thai). Old fermented fish - hugely popular in the North East of Thailand! I had to bring a bag of it down from Sakhon Nakhon - it was shocking - the smell is still in my car months later! I don't understand it - how can you eat it? Why would you eat it? and who was the first crazy bastard to try eating it? I just don't get it! PJack, this not a nice thing to say about the chinese. Its a food that us chinese people like. But just because you don't like it doesn't give you the right to make a comment about the chinese being insane. Just want you to know I would not say any thing bad about your culture. As for the moon cake. There are all kinds of variety in moon cakes and I am sure that if one was picked out to your liking, you would enjoy them Sincerely, King

PeeMarc
Meang da, grasshoppers, any bugs, catapillars, sea slugs, wichidy grubs, any offle. When I lived in Singapore, I would get about 30 different moon cakes every year from my staff and suppliers etc. The only one I do like (but just a mouthful) is the one with mixed nuts. I get you on the offle although I do understand it has a lot of vitamins etc. Even I keep telling people not to bother each year I have to put up with the same in my office with the moonies, they just keep appearing on my desk from nowhere. I am sure they do it just to take the piss now. Ill tell ya what though, I wouldn't want to catch one on my forehead. That's gonna hurt...

Nope, can't help ya! it's called Balut http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut i am filipino, but i'm not fond of eating it... i've tried it on several occasions, but i only end up eating the "normal" yolk part of it... i can't eat the entire thing... it's too exotic for my taste buds. Hugely popular in the Phillipines I believe! Oh yeah... now we're getting into silly food. Last time I was doing some work in Tapai, my local staff took me out to 'Snake Alley'. There, they insisted we all have the shot of snakes blood mixed with rice wine.... complete with the snakes (still) beating heart floating in the shot glass. It was all I could do to not throw up all over the table after that one. I don't even eat sharks fin (on principle), and never really understand the eating of bears and tiger paws, embryos, monkey brains etc. I say "no way" to this stuff.
