How well do you know about Thailand?

I think the original "King and I" was somehow better just because it was sillier and didnt take itself seriously.

and which is exactly how the Thais want the King to be viewed.

huh?

I think I've said before that sarcasm isn't really widely understood much in Asia.

And what is the meaning exactly?

explain...

peeMark I think I understood since pJack said "Thai people like yellow, pink and black" I'm not that stupid. I asked to confirm that I was right.

I don't care if you understand Thai people or not. It's hard to understand our strong feelings to do what we do. It's not new for me. I have heard something from a farang worse than that. I think wow!! that's totally idea? Wearing those colors, it's not the rule but we agree to do it.

For you PJack if you think it's silly go ahead na... I don't give a damn but pls don't laugh if we wear "black" pls respect, ok? you know why we wear "black"

err... can you see anything to do with colours in any of my quote boxes? I was referring to Pjacks sarcastic (not serious) comment about Thai wanting their king to be viewed as silly etc from my commeent above.

See?

Chill girl

"Peu Paw"

Thais like to wear these colors "Peu Paw"

and... it seems... they like to play dress-up, like in uniforms, etc., which I find endearingly cute.

Bcool, don't get your panties in a twist before you actually figure out what is being said. I was defending the King. Come on, tune it up, babe.

i thought anna and the king was banned in thailand, same as the king and i ?

From Wiki....

"The film implies a much larger role in the development of the Thai nation than Anna Leonowens ever claimed for herself. Even more controversially, it suggests a romance between Anna and the King.

A Thai adviser was hired, as were many Thai actors. The screenplay went through five rewrites in an effort to win approval by the Thai government. However, the screenplay still contained too many inaccuracies, so the production was moved to Ipoh and Penang, Malaysia. The film is banned in Thailand because of its distortions of Thai history and the historically inaccurate portrayal of King Mongkut, whose memory is highly revered in Thailand. However, home-video copies have found their way into the Kingdom and the film has gained a following.

The story of Lady Tuptim, and of the slave woman La-ore whom Anna works to set free, are repeated from earlier versions of the film and play, and from Anna Leonowens' own writings. Tuptim's story is not a matter of historical record. It was based on bits of harem gossip, and if it genuinely occurred, may have happened long before Anna got there, or before Mongkut took the throne. In any case, Mongkut's law provided for women who were unhappy with harem life to leave without disgrace, provided they had no children."

I think the original "King and I" was somehow better just because it was sillier and didnt take itself seriously.

I never seen Anna and the King...I have heard this movie long long time ago. I just knew that the copies of this movie had very high turnover since it is banned by government.

ammm. better find it

This topic... it becomes from my thought. i have heard many things in Thailand from my bf, which he has experienced in Thailand for a long time.

Before i met him, i'd never gone to Silom, Patpong, Nana and Soi Cowboy at night... i just know those places are very famous for farangs. There are thai products with higher prices, many thai girls, many bars and restaurants, many shows etc.

If i want to go out, i prefer somewhere local people would join... (i dont tend to avoid farang... i just have no idea why i be there..that's it)

My bf took me there because i wanted to know how they are... i felt like a little girl exploring to the another world!!!

exciting..huh?!

see? l live in BKK for my whole life.. but it doesn't mean i know anything more than you guys who spending time there just couple times....

life is to learn new things

here is just a tiny example

And Ann Leonowens also claimed for herself - in her book - a much larger role for herself in the education of the princes and the development of Siam than she actually had.

I had read somewhere that when she was confronted by a Siamese diplomat in Europe and asked why she had made up so many lies and exaggerations, she basically said that it would sell more books.

If I were to turn this subject around and ask the average Australian how well they know Australia, I would say things might be quite similar. Most Australians, i think, travel overseas more than they travel their own country.

The average Australian goes to work every day, has the occassional BBQ, goes to the pub a couple of times a week and spends a huge amount of time at home and/or with their family. They have an average of 20 days holidays a year plus the public holidays.

Foreign tourists, armed with their Lonely Planet Guide books and cameras and determined to pack in as much as they possibly can into a relatively short time see so much more.

But do they really KNOW Australia? I dont think so.

Thai people may not know all the destinations and info in guidebooks. But they will always KNOW Thailand better than tourists or expatriates.

It depends what you mean by KNOWING Thailand.

Obviously, they know the culture and its nuances better. They may know better places to see and go for certain things.

But when it comes to Thai history, most probably don't know their own country all that well because of the education system and the way history is taught here.

On the other hand, you are right that the same can probably be said of most people in our countries.

I agree with you... it's the truth. Thai always knows Thailand better than tourists or expatriates because we live, learn and absorb culture (including subculture) and the way of life here.... it's easy to adapt themselves to fit any place (in Thailand or Thai society in the world). I also believe farang who spend their life here for a long time can implicitly call themselves as "Thai"

agree with you too. When i was study in primary and secondary school, i had to learn about Thai history...it is the core subjects. I had to memorize all that before taking exam.... so after that it's all gone.

Hey Triple A hows you?

Just one thing quickly dont worry about talking straight, because in my book it is a good thing.

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Maybe one day siamhotel will post something that makes sense in the meantime the best solution is to not give him so much attention. Or we are only condoning his behavior. silly man.

Hey, UK

nice to hear from you  ..i'd rather agree with you... condonation or disinterest might be the solution...

anyway, enjoy!!!

oh!! in my book..talking straight is a good thing... but i'm just a bit worried that someone ,perhaps, cant accept that
