We know during the 1940's or 50's, During the process of Thaification, many chinese who lived in Thailand were forced to change their names to something Thai.

So if the Gov't of Thailand Today, forced all Farang who wanted to live in Thailand to change their names into something that is Thai, what would it be? :lol:

If your already Thai what is your full Thai given name?

Couldn't see that for farangs actually living there. For me, the infantile amusement arising from 'porn' being used in names in Thailand wore off after about 2 days.

:D

I like that!!! :D

so, would it be possible to translate a farang name to Thai by using the meaning of the farang name??

So, instead of just taking 'John' or 'Iain' for example, could you look at what those names mean?

(a real query for you native Thai speakers)

so, meanings of my name;

Iain - gift from God (no smart comments Cherie)

David - Beloved

Robertson - Son of Bright Fame

Donnelly - Brave Chieftain

(a mouthful I know)

Really intrigued to know if this could be done, and would it end up as long as Krung Thep's full name?? :lol:

that shouldnt be a problem, but have to do some research since im not good at translations. it has to be a mix of sanskrit and Thai words.

Chieftain = Praya(lord)

Beloved = maybe Kham = something that is precious or cherished

Robertson = Dara (star) :lol:

Iain = Rama

sure you will get more imput

Your middle name has the same meaning as my Thai name. How coincident.

In the old days, Thai people use only first name and Thai people were called for exp. Sak (man name), the son of Pong (his father name). We start using last names in year 1912 (2455). just fyi.

your right, surnames did not come about until western influence

many names would come from some sort of association of some figure/person who was head of the family or clan or a place of importance from which you came.
