Loy Kratong Fun @ Wat Arun
This was my 4th Loy Kratong in Thailand, and previously, I have not really enjoyed them. My complaints have been fairly standard: noisy, crowded, polluted, impoliteness, and even thievery. Last night I spent my Loy Kratong at Wat Arun, and for the first time I really enjoyed myself.Yes there were a lot of people, and yes there was a lot of noise. But, it seemed more orgainised, more beautiful, more relaxed, and people putting their rubish in bins and the abundance of bread kratongs put my enviromental concerns to rest. Last but not least, I spent Loy Kratong with a bunch of people nearly as nutty as I am. Hoorah! The backdrop was always going to be beautiful. Wat Arun bathed in light. In front a stage that loudly, but not too much so, got the crowd in a festive mood with a mixture of tradional and modern Thai song and dance.
When there were so many Kratong's made of either biodegradable wood, or even better' bread; and one who is still polluting the water ways with polystyrene is rather stupid. Here we see Wan elegantly displaying one of the many fine pieces available for 50 baht or less.
The crowd was genuinely chilled, in spite of the large numbers.
The usually kitch lights seemed instead to add a tasteful splash of light.
Families churning out colurful Kratongs could barely keep up with demand. I understand that their husbands were keeping a watchful eye while drinking Sang Som nearby. Very considerate of them not to get in the way of their hardworking wives and children like that.
Golf was so hungry that anyone who didn't look after their Kratong was at risk of having it eaten...
...Fortunately she found a bowl of noodles the size of her head to fill up on.
Cream...errrr.... looked liked she wanted to eat...errrr..... something else, but unfortunately could only find a won-ton.
Out on the water, each boat was a festival of light unto itself.
Loy Kratong Pretties.
Golf, a girl of simple wants, prayed that she could find a bigger bag to buy for carrying all her 'stuff'.... oh, and world peace.
When the shows were not so exciting...
...the girls put on an impromptu 'Porng Larng' performance of their own.
Not wanting to be left out, The Punisher took some lessons from TF's own 'Porng Larng' expert.
Hmmm, at least someone's Loy Kratong wishe came true! Greedy! So, a good time was had by all. And if no one has a better suggestion, I think I'll be going back to Wat Arun next year.
