At least 31 people have been killed and 10 injured after a gunman went on the rampage at the campus of Virginia Tech university in Virginia, US. Police say there were two separate shooting incidents - at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a student dormitory, and Norris Hall, an engineering building. The incidents were about two hours apart. Police say they believe there was one gunman and that he is dead. It is the deadliest shooting at a US educational facility. The state university in the town of Blacksburg is home to 26,000 students. Virginia Tech police chief Wendell Flinchum said that emergency services had received a call at 0715 (1215 GMT) alerting them to a multiple shooting at West Ambler Johnston Hall. He said that two hours later there was a second report of shooting, this time at Norris Hall.

Eyewitnesses locked down inside the university buildings have been using the internet to try to glean information about what is happening and many have emailed the BBC News website. Nikolas Macko was in a mathematics class in Norris Hall when they heard a series of loud bangs in the hallway which prompted a female student sitting near the door to move to close it. "She peeked out into the hallway, and saw the shooter, so she immediately closed the door. Three other students moved a table that was in front of the room - it seats approximately 40 students at capacity - and barricaded it against the door.

"A few seconds later, the shooter tried to open the door, but my classmates kept it well shut, as they held the table against it from floor level. "The shooter shot the door twice at chest level, which resulted in two holes in the door, one of which hit the podium in the front of the class room and the other continued out the window. At this point he reloaded, shot the door again - this shot did not penetrate - and moved on to the other classrooms," Mr Macko added. A fleet of ambulances has ferried the injured to nearby hospitals. However, rescue efforts were reportedly hampered by high winds which meant that medical helicopters could not be used. President 'horrified' "Some of the victims were shot in a classroom," Mr Flinchum said. He said that police believed there had been just one shooter involved and that he was now dead at Norris Hall. They are now investigating whether he was shot by security forces or killed himself. Mr Flinchum said it was unclear if the assailant was a student, but a number of the victims were.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said, adding that the university was in the process of informing the next of kin of those killed. The White House released a statement saying that President George W Bush was "horrified" by the incident. It is the deadliest shooting at a university or school in the US. In 1966, the day after killing his wife and mother, gunman Charles Whitman opened fire from a tower on the campus of the University of Texas killing 14 people and injuring 31 others. In 1999 two teenagers at Columbine High School in Colorado killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.

Yes, very sad news for the families. Some possibly overseas in China or India.

See your stats Treborz: I believe there has been killings in all but 14 of the 50 states and DC. Pathetic!!

very sad, there is a lot of violence here in the USA. I think we have the best and worst of everything for a "developed" country. Gun control is very controversial, and the gun lobby is one of the most powerful special interest groups.

"We have met the enemy and it is us."

unbelievable....

thx 2 the

"The National Shooting Sports Foundation" (trade association for the shooting, hunting and firearms industry) promoting a political climate supportive of America's traditional firearms rights.... !!!

Well I never want to test that Theory out. No Thank you.

I stick with my own Country & My Thailand. That's good enough for me.

oh...i am so sorry to hear.

I suppose the man is mad.

Why the security guards do not manage to shoot the shooter down in time?

This is worse than southern thailand.

This is so horrible. And the accounts at this point are still so cloudy and baffle the mind:what happened, how, oh why! :( As eyewitnesses tell that they read from emails that there has been shooting in campus, and suddenly at the same time started second shootings...and so many people died in such a short time interval. Just horrible sad thing. That the person seems to succesfully escaped the first shooting and hit again with loads of weapons two hours later. Bad luck for the police and victims. And weird and scary how the students got news about this from emails... I guess nobody knew that the first shooting was just a precursos for something much more sinister on big campus. :( (Sources Guardian UK and LA Times, LA Times has video clips shared with other news sites)

The shooter might know whereabout in the university very very well.

It sounds like World Trade . The first attack is just a prologue so that the eyewitnesses have time to prepare for the camera.

Too bad, why the university did not announce the first shot? They do not have a system of warning?

duanja: I dont think that there really is reason to shout out wolf everytime thereis someone shot...as it happens a lot, and most of shootings in general are not this kind of massshootings. So I kinda understand that there is no such system as: person shot on campus, close down everything, it might be coming for more. How could you know that what shooting leads to massacre...Anyway, tomorrow morning we all know more, unfortunatly. What ever the "reason"behind the shooting, it just is horribly sad that these kindsof things happen. And besides:wtf **** is the fascination of these ppl to start shooting on campuses and schools? Just out of curiosity, why not at mall, or amusement park, or just on busy street, ****, if you wanna just kill people why you have to always choose some school. Why not hospita for example, there is lot of ppl who cant escapel? Or anything, damn insane ppl these shooters are.

Well. the gun laws are getting tighter and tighter in the USA. But, these are memtal imbalanced people doing this for whatever the reasons? There are a lot of crazies all over, not just in the US. If you are a citizen, then vote to try to change the gun laws and their representatives, but many don't even bother to vote or voice their concerns over these issues. It is easy to say do something, but not easy to get it done. Anti-gun protestors go up against gun lobbist with big money and people behind all of this. A catch-22 like everything else!

I have been to VA Tech, my sister graduated from there. A relatively difficult school to get into, smart people, nice part of the country. quiet, isolated.

Lunatics can live anywhere. This is scary and sad indeed.

Seen Erin Sheehan interview on CNN? Gets a feeling that she was in the classroom that was focus of the attacker. And man, it is so weird to see her describe and talk: after all she has just been to classroom where 20 ppl were killed and look her composure. Amazing. She just talks, so calmly. Almost non-chalantly. Probably her brains are in shortcircuit and shock effect...Events hit her home later, I guess.

In USA, they still have not revealed the details about the shooter.

But according to News coming from China, the shooter was Chinese and he went to USA last August to study.

Some Chinese people are really joyful over it according to my friend there.

Messed up world.

"Messed up world."

"it sucks no matter what way you look at it..."

And what will they think if some of the victims were Chinese. Fair amount of them attending school there.

Sad news...very terrible...

but changing the gun lawas is a bunch of crap, that the governement want to do anyway, so they can "control" the people easier.

When you "outlaw guns"

"Only the outlaws will HAVE guns"

not the good people..

I think there really is no answer to the problem, but taking away guns is not the answer.

The first two victims were the black guy and some woman (maybe the Chinese guys gf).... Perhaps the guy walked in on his gf having sex with the black guy! So he freaked out and when nuts....
