Little story going back about 12 years ago .         Just started work at the place that I am still working now . I was fresh out of uni , and I got myself my first full time job . Had to start on the floor , no problem for me , I thought if I work hard enough I might get a position that I will be happy with .                            Never told any of the workers that I was a graduate , as they obviously discriminated against the educated .You know all the problems at work they would blame at their graduate managers not being in touch with the REAL world . Where did you work before PHIL ???  Oh me , oh just some casual place that hires some casual kind of guys like me .                              OH thats ok then , because these graduates think they know it all , but in reality , they know **** ,  Yeah , I know what you mean I blabble , its the same everywhere . even in my last workplace ???  WTF who I am I kidding ??? Its my first                                   Anyway after passing all the macho , you're not gay nor are you educated kind of tests , I kind of felt finally that I belong . One particular tea break I will never forget.                              I was buggered , time to sit and have a smoke ( now an ex smoker ) in the canteen . Now the workforce was made up of 99% males and Milka , Macedonian but strong as an OX . Ok I walk to the end of the canteen but no empty chairs.                              There was a guy , sitting on his chair with his feet on another chair .This guy was huge , about 6 '4 and full of muscles , but he wasnt eating a vegemite sandwich for all you MEN AT WORK fans . Tattooed everywhere , I mean you couldn't see any skin .                              It didnt bother me that I had to stay standing , but I felt for this old greek guy called Paul . He was standing near the tattoed guy , and I felt like I should help . Stupid me , dont forget now I am only 24, and life is full of roses.                              What do i do ? , I build up enough courage and think IDGAF ( I dont give a fcuk ) I am going to take that chair off tattoo man and give it to old greek man ok .                                So I casually take that chair off tattoo man , and his feet fall flat on the floor and I place the chair next to  greek man . Paul the greek man shows me a shocked look on his face , so I figure , tattoo man is going to belt the living daylights out of me .                                Ok I am ready now for this huge fist to greet my face , but it never comes . Ok , its going to happen at the carpark after work I think to myself . About 10 minutes elapses , then it was time to go back to work . Now I am ready , I know its going to happen . Punch hard and fast I tell myself against this giant hopefully not too fit slobby human being .                  Paul the greek guy gets up and goes back to work , and I think, thanks for the supprt leaving me with Goliath on my own . Tattoo guy gets up , while someone else hands him his crutches and all of a sudden I think ;                                    YFI ( you fcuken idiot ) , tattoo man has been injured at work and could hardly walk and I take the chair off him thinking he was a bully .                                  How wrong was I , its amazing how sure we can be sometimes , and find that we have prejudged the situation without knowing the facts.                                 Many more incidences occurred before I finally I accepted , WAIT , look and hear all the information available then you can judge without prejudgice .

You say that working class people look down upon educated people, or at least some of them do. But it swings both ways. Some educated people think the working class are thick as **** and have pointless lives. Well i went to Uni along with my brother. I have 5 brothers and being from an Irish family most of em are working class, (not saying all the Irish are working class). But when i go home to England i always get a factory job cos the money is better and they offer me overtime. I always find the people i work with really nice people, down to earth and honest. Of course you always get the occasional wrongun like myself, but all in all, good blokes.

All i'm trying to say is, as soon as you put yourself in the bracket, (working class or educated), you seperate yourself. People look at me and they say 'he's tough, he was in the army he's gonna be hard, by the book. But I am caring, and sensitive. Isn't Schindler's list a great film?' Sorry i digressed.

Anyway if i had to be anything it would be 'working class', like John Lennon.......... Or Liam Gallagher.

nice post!

and suprising to see the content of rkidlad's post...

(I just carried a 3 yr old down 2 flights of stairs, and some Thai staff "ratted on me" that I was doing unsafe work practices!)

They felt so superiour, that they reported me, because at my workplace they hate farangs.

I got called into the foreign administrators office and told that a Thai supervisor reported me.

I kindly ointed out that the supervisor should have opened her eyes before her mouth.

The little girl just broke her leg and couldn't walk.

Not exactly related, but your story is similar.

We all need to look carefully before taking action.

punisher ; yes lucky for me he was in fact injured and not a bully as this guy was huge

rkidlad ; quite right , but the word is directed towards people of european origin in particular Italians and Greeks

dave40 and gav ; the word to me is very offensive , but I know you dont think of it in that way . In the dictionary it actually means a foreign disease . When the Italians and Greeks migrated to Australia , they were called WOGS . Many people in Australia still dont see it as a racial slur , but thats exactly what it is .

condotown ; my workpace has people from all different ethnic origins , but I still dont know what that means either

vacanti ; yes very similar , it happens often in our every day life . situations that may seem very different until you scratch a little beneath the surface .
