Ok I have been hearing today that bars in Bkk will be closed this weekend from Friday 14 till Monday 16 because of the elections

Anyone know if this is true???

Also that will be closed next weekend from Friday 21 till the Monday 24.

Also a rumour that they will be closed from Friday 14 all week till after the elections

Anyone any idea what’s happening???

If they are closed on Sunday 16 can anyone tell me of a hole in the wall, knock 3 times ask for Joe place that will be open on Sunday??

Cause after travelling for 20 hours I not want to be stuck in hotel room drinking the mini bar watching Thai TV!!!! ( no offence meant to Thai TV it just not my 1st choice

Thailand - no drinking/alcohol - no way !

Their's far too much money to be lost if bars/clubs were closed for such long periods. I think it's just rumours that you heard.

Alas... the news is true.

but what of the enforcement?

Ask if they will be serving prior to the evening and you may find out. Then again, you have to go there on the night in question to find out.

There are always some places that are open - sometimes with doors half closed, dim lights... - dull places.

Sometimes not so dull. Mostly the bars who will open are catering to foreigners. Any bars in major hotels (high end joints) will serve.

There is ALWAYS someone serving in Bangkok. They always make these proclamations but they are not strictly enforced. Grab a tuk tuk driver...they always know places that are open!

"BANGKOK: -- No alcohol will be served to expats, tourists or local residents in bars and restaurants over the next two weekends nationwide due to the oncoming election.

The first dry days will be 14, 15 and 16 December, pre-election days for a few million Thais who registered to vote early.

Thaivisa has been informed that no alcohol is allowed to be served nationwide between Friday 14th at 6pm until Sunday 16th at midnight.

Elections on the 23rd will mean no alcohol will be sold from 6pm on the 22nd till midnight on the 23rd of December.

Practically this means two or three dry days in the two weekends ahead, although some tourist areas tend to be lenient once it's past 7pm on election day.

Please be aware that local rules could apply. Big hotels are not likely to be affected.

although *** and if u know where to go it shouldn't be a problem finding somewhere that will be serving alcohol.

Last two elections, when I was in BKK, it wasnt allowed to buy single cans of beer. I was allowed to buy a big box of beer cans. Some 7/11 owners sold spirits in little Lipo-bottles under the counter and every hotel bar will serve drinks.

At a very famous tavern in Soi (dont tell the name here) I ordered red wine for dinner. At first they said no way - then I suggested to serve the red wine in a soft drink glass accompanied by a bottle of coke.

The same worked with a Gin Tonic and a bottle of sparkling water..

My mate Cassidy arrives tomorrow. The man's a beer monster. Last year he dragged me from bar to bar for 14 nights (and days) to a red-eyed state of dribbling horribleness and near nervous breakdown . This alcohol ban may just save my liver and sanity. Thanks.

Amen
