Thanks for that....I will now copy and paste those Thai words so when I am in Bkk next month, I will avoid taxis with those signs.

Have a day, Unny.

same shenanigans on silom late at night.

coming in to suvarnabumi airport i got a taxi who told me he would not use the meter. he had a number in mind which I did not like. We discussed it for a bit and he explained by law the airport is 25 kilo (or whatever the distance is) from downtown Victory Monument and therefore he is not bound to use the meter. He turned it on after all. The next day I checked. Turns out he is correct. They have to change the law to include the airport within the jurisdiction.

äÃèÃѺ¤¹ä·Â (No Thai Passenger)

What the... ?

I was having a discussion with a friend the other night about taxis who refuse to drive with the meter. He as arguing that to him (no matter how f**ked up) he supports overpricing goods and services for foreigners.

I understand his position - if tourists enjoy Thailand, then Thailand should enjoy the tourists too.But at what expense is 'Thailand' (or rather individuals in affected industry) enjoying the tourists?

I had no idea about this but I'll try to put those words on my mind ;) Hope you got home safely.

I heard alot of the taxi "scams" were shoo'd away from the airport, so i guess they just setup in a new area. The "no Thai" thing is because THAI can read what it says, Foreigners cannot. It almost like pointing out to Thais that "this is a scam for foreigners, if you can read this sign, do not use our service"

I had my run-in with them. Never again.

If they don't put the meter on I normally let them drive for 1-2 km before asking again, if they persist I ignore them then pay nothing at the end. the police like nothing more than bashing Taxi drivers.

They are breaking the law! I hate taxi drivers that try and charge a fixed price instead of putting on the meter. If i'm out and have had a few beers I will open the back passenger door if they ask for a fixed price and refuse the meter I will leave the door open and call him a monitor lizard! He then looses face, as he has to get out the cab and close the door himself! This works best on Silom Road!! I've never had problems down night bazzar though, just go to Rama 4 and call one thats passing by rather than the one thats parked up!

Something like this happens almost everywhere now. Some of a cab driver don't have a f*uking clue how to drive they still àÊ×á asking for no meter charge. The scariest thing is some of them are probably has been driving for more than 20 yrs!

P.s. Now i know why they put the sign 'I love farang' there.

I was there last night, and didn't have any problem getting a taxi with meter. Bigger problem is when it is raining and they don't want to go anywhere. Sometimes you gotta stop 5 or 6 of them before one wants to go.

Best thing to do is just sit in the taxi and say Paiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii raeww raew

From Suan Lum i used to just get out on Rama IV or Witthayu and the problem was solved...

I accepted only once to get into a taxi without meter, mostly for respect to the honest taxi driver who always put it... That only time it was raining like hell, friday evening and have to go to airport... the old driver asked me 300 baht

we ended up suffering of the worst traffic jam I-ve ever been into, it took us almost three hours to get to the airport... and I left him 400 with the advice to calculate better next time...

I love Suan Lum Night Bazaar, but the taxis really do take the piss. We had the same problem with those guys after the Muay Thai there in Lumpini. So we just walked out onto the street and stopped a taxi. Problem solved.

But the thing that I can't respect is that they say "No Thai passengers." I mean, I can tolerate them gouging foreigners, who they perceive as being rich. But when they get so greedy as to disrespect their own people, that's really low.
