Thaksin and Pojaman apply for asylum in England

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Khunying Pojaman both are applying for asylum in London, the Sunday Mirror reported on its online edition.

The British Home Office has confirmed about the two's asylum applications. It is unclear when the applications were lodged.

Thaksin and Pojaman have become fugitives for graft charges after jumping bail in August.

The Nation** What really confuses me is how does one claim political persecution when one's own party controls the government and one's brother-in-law is prime minister?

In the last week, the UK Government have announced the return or two people to the Cabinet. First, Peter Mandleson. In 1998 he was forced to resign as Trade and Industry secretary after non disclosure of a financial arrangement with Geoffrey Robinson, ANOTHER Government minister at the time. Tony Blair brought him back, and once again in 2001, he had to resign for trying to get a passport for a very rich foreign businessman named Scrichand Hinduja. And now, he has been brought back a THIRD time.

Second. David Blunkett. He has also resigned in disgrace from the British Cabinet twoce in 2004, and 2005 on charges of share dealing and employment outside of his cabinet role cause great conflict of interest. And now HE will be back in the Government for a THIRD time.

And you wouldn't class that as bent???

Hmmmm

not to mention the blatant offer of UK passports to anyone from Hong Kong with enough money if they wanted to jump ship before the handover back to the Chinese in 1997.

Thats the actual mega-scandal and a slap in the face of millions of regular Joes like you and me who work their butt off, never engage in criminal activities and still stand before closed doors here and there.

and just to think 200 odd years ago, the Poms sent convicts to Australia . . . . looks like others are sending to them and they can keep them. Hope the Shitalots freeze their nuts and **** off !!

Being ousted undemocratically, and having the same people who did it still after his blood - that's what gives Thaksin the right to claim he would be persecuted if he returned. He may have been a part of, or responsible for, the very the system he's now running from, but it wouldn't take a half decent lawyer to string a perfectly reasonable argument together as to why he's a good candidate for asylum. Something tells me he can afford a decent lawyer.

heh - a free ticket to Australia for a spot of shoplifting doesn't kinda sound that bad :)

and yeah, there's probably a queue of lawyers going halfway round Trafalgar Square waiting to sign his get out of jail ticket...

The damn place is going to the dogs ! Half the job adverts in the agency windows are in Polish now... the best thing about the UK (apart from family) is the fact that it's very far away from here, and won't come any closer...
