Bali is very heavily influenced in its history by Hinduism, unlike most of the Indonesian archipelago which became Muslim. To understand about the symbolism of Hindu art, you need to understand a little about the religion and beliefs.

have a look at ancient roman mosaics or indian art - in many pieces of craftsmanship there are naked couples having sex just as in Kamasutram - a masterpiece and a book of sexual positions and how to have a fulfilled sex life. Sometimes it seems as if our ancestors were more open towards having fun than our prude society.

All of Indonesia was actually once Hindu and before that Buddhist(they like to give every religion at least one shot).Only Bali retained Hinduism but the legacy is still widely seen outside (eg the temples at Prambanan /Borobudur and on the mysterious Dieng plateau in Java).

when you walking around bkk temples, take a close look to those painting on the wall's chaple or bass relief depicted Ramayana scenes ...there should be something interesting :))

I have seen them a lot in India too. Especially in the Jain temples. Jainism is a kind of 'purified' Hinduism, killing every living being is not done. They go that far that they use a brush to clean the ground before them, so they would not step on an insect or putting a cloth for the mouth, just to prevent swallowing any insect. If you visit a temple it's forbidden to wear leather belts or leather wallets. Very weird, but consequent.
