I think everyone knows that. Even I have heard some people said about "Inner Beauty" but in this material world, I don't wanna expect too much.Well, let's start my story... There is a salon that I like to go.. It's kinda famous one. Everytime I go there I always drive so I don't care about the look the much sometimes I don't wanna put make-up on and wear shorts, T-shirt and very thin flipflop (for driving). I look like ****, I know, but come on!! Just hair cut, why I need to look like a super model, right? I don't care how they treated me anyway... Everytime, the receptionists there never see me. They might think "Why poor girl like you come here" Everytime they said nothing, I always be the one who tell them what I wanna do. However, on Friday night, it was so strange. After work I changed my cloths, I hate wearing office uniform and walking to that area, plus I thought I would join TF party. Anyway, I still wear short pants, and a blouse that I bought from a local market but it looks very good and not cheap (in my eyes) and wear good looking shoes (sure!! they are expensive ones). Unbelieve able!! the same receptionists, saw me before I stepped in the salon, they "wai" very humble and said "Sawasdee Kha/Krup" I turned around saw no one but myself... They talked to me??? Oh my goodness, what's happening to them. They asked what I want to do with my hair, if i had any hair dresser in my mind already? Invited me to the seat and more...I scrated my head "Arai Wahh" They might took wrong pills I guess... then I looked at my shoes and my outfits in the mirror... I realized cuz of these for sure. I'm in service business but I never done this way, everyone's welcome, you know? Made me think these days if I wanna get good service I have to wear nice outfits and look hi-so? Another case, my company invite a Nobel Prof. Sorry I don't wanna say his name but believe me, he's very famous. He gave a short lecture at my hospital, and there was a guy who was in group of audience. Most audience where nice suits, some wear nice shirts, but he didn't look cool at all... He did wear very old creepy T-shirts and strange shorts with old sport shoes. A girl at conference room whispered in my ear, "That guy was weird...should I call the security to take him out?" I said "I don't think so, I have some feeling that that guy has something special" After that she told her boss about him. Her boss didn't care what she said at all. I think her boss might know something about that guy. Then at the Question and Answer section. The strange guy got up and asked the nobel prof which were smart questions. After lecture, I knew my farang friend really wanna see the video that I record. He was so excite about that strange guy, he said "Neung, did you know this guy was (his name) very famous in the medical world... gosh!! he was here at our hospital we should be proud!!"I'm so glad that I didn't support that girl idea. The owner of the hospital i work for and he own a bank... and insurance company. He is a millionare I could say. You will not know if he rich, once he drove his car by himself, I saw he got out, wear old outfits and old flipflop. When will people stop juge other from the appearance?

I care about how I look... not because i want other people to see me as "hi-so" or want them to give me respect, but simply because I like looking at the mirror and I should like what I see. I've never reached a point of "not caring" about the way I look...

For other people though, I don't really care if they choose not to care about how they look. However, I still think that people should dress appropriately for the occasion, the time, the venue etc whatever your status is - rich, poor, educated blah blah blah.

I would probably have the same reaction toward a person attending a conference in shorts, old shirt and sandals to a person attending a casual sunday picnic in a glittery dress looking so "hi-so"... i find both STRANGE, but not to the point of telling them to leave [unless it was specifically issued to be a formal event etc.]

Jayner> ive just wrriten a long post just about a mercedes :)

Have had an experience here in the nice summer-days we have had in Copenhagen - my friend just bought a 400.000 usd mercedes, and we were taking it for a ride in inner copenhagen. Im not into cars, i dont know anything about cars and they dont interest me (even though im a man) - for me its transportation and would never buy a car for those kinda money.

When i go out in town, enters a cafe, i dont get people heads turning normally, especially not every girl in the room. Im not greeted by smiling high-end babes coming to my table and being interested in who and what i am, i would have to be pro-aggro to get girls around my table.

But when we entered in that damn car, then suddenly we were like the most interesting 2 guys they had ever met. Had smiles coming from girls that were way out our league, and we had girls coming up to us when we arrived at cafe's asking if they could sit at our table and to do a homerun would have been too easy.

If it was only a few that did it, then it would be ok, but the amount of attention it gave, and the amount of girls who either are very very interested in cars - or are very very interested in guys who has (or appears to have) money, were abit scary to experience.

I can understand that looks can have an impact, first impression is something that is hard to change as we are build that way, but i find it so much more less attractive if you judge people by their social status, and i really find it very unattractive that girls turns themselves inside out just because they smell money.

It was a few days in Copenhagen where i suddenly felt like i was "handsuum maan" among my fellow danes.

>>> That's cool.. If I go to somewhere that I should take care about my look I would do... but sometimes I go to local market, I don't think so... and that salon, it's Hi-So one, but I think "who cares"

>>> True, me too, but some people just don't care about that... when they are reach the point of "I'm richest, or I'm genious" they don't care what ever people think about them.

Happened many times to me! I have this habit that I reallly dont dress well if not needed, like if I go shopping I love wearing my flip flops (60 Baht hehe) if I go inside the shop and started choosing outfits I can see the sales staff how they look at me from head to toe...is this girl really can afford to buy those items??? Try me lol!

Worst I've experienced inside the dress shop nearby my place...I must admit I looked like **** that time flip flops again, jeans, shirt and almost did not comb my hair. Days before that the staff keeps on reminding me that if I'm going to ask their service to repair my dress I should pay this certain amount, the shop is a "hi-so" place, they design clothes to one member of the royal family etc etc... I said no problem I will pay. If they only knew that the price they asked me is higher than the price of the dress I bought, anyway coz I love that dress very much I would pay any amount for it! Back to the day I need to claim the repaired dress...opened the door said good afternoon to everyone inside. There was this woman sitting at the corner of the room she looked at me from head to toe again, I sit in front of her... couple of minutes she just uttered this phrase: "How much is your salary?" to my surprise ohh holy ****...she did not even bothered to say hi or started a light conversation/introduction or started a topic for us to be comfortable to each other and the following conversation as follows....

Woman: How much is your salary?

I'm still surprised....

Me: Excuse me I beg your pardon???

Have to repeat it three-four times she cant understand English well

Woman: Again?

Take note she did not even said please or kindly which I find very rude..

Me: Why did you asked for my salary?

Woman: I want you to be the nanny of my daughter!

I want to laugh right away the moment she said that but I was annoyed already...

Me: Excuse me Ma'am, I work as a chief accountant and paid for this amount (six digits), I have extra ordinary benefits, I travel abroad 2-4 times a month, etc, etc...

Hahaha I bragged and made up my story although only 70% of it is true. In a way I was really offended not offered being a nanny its a decent job I like kids very much but the way she approached me very rude...

Woma: Oh sorry, sorry na...

She really thought I'm a maid (the way I dress) I look like I was asked by my Boss to pick the dress/gown inside that shop. One staff called me that I can try my dress they want to see if it fits well...Haha ohh I saw her face, she cant beleive that like her I'm a client too!

>> To bCool my apology for this novel comment I should have posted this as another entry but when I read this article it reminded me of that incident and started typing...have a nice day!

reality is people will judge you the way you look. and if you really don't care about how you look, then you shouldn't mind or care if other people mistaken you as someone else or a servant or a person who doesn't belong. it's really just a cruel world.

I didn't know if you get my point or not... Did I say I was angry? no!! I felt so weird that day... what if I mind about that Salon I wouldn't keep go back there, I usually go there once in 3-4 month, they just not remember me... but like I care. I just know about they acted before compare to the day. I quite shock.

Look, I know you have high self confidence and yes you look so great!! but hey I just share my experience here. We know some experience from the others... I think it's just amazing, and it's lesson for us not to judge by the look. Tell you I don't look like **** all the time... I know what I should wear for the difference occassion...but the place like that salon, it doesn't matter what I wear, I just know I have money to pay, they just do thier job.

Unfortunately, never krap. I could care less though because it's out of my control. I wear sweatpants and sneakers most times because it's comfortable. I learned a long time ago about status, then decided to ignore it. People are people, not what they wear.

Good post :)

Very good observation Neung. And a lot of good points in the comments. Regretfully, appearance makes a big difference in how people react to you. In your example at the salon, the girls are trained to respond to a certain look of wealth.

I was told once by my Graduate School mentor to never go by appearance when doing business. It can lead to very embarrassing situations. But I think people like to be exclusive, especially in "higher class" areas. If you don't look like one of them, then you are obviously not part of the club. It's sad to be judged so quickly, but it happens a lot.

P'Neung. I have same experience with Cosmetic service as well. They even treated you bad even you just bought them 4,000 baht! They only count you in if you are in nice clothes and have a full make up on.
