Bravo-Big-Trouble-In-Tourist-Thailand-WkThis new documentary series explores the ugly side of tourism in Thailand.

But it's not all scandal and sensationalism.

Every year, thousands of Brits flock to Thailand in search of the country's famed abundance of sun, sea and sin.

But a party paradise isn't always on the cards when young tourists misunderstand local customs or fall foul of the country's notoriously tough legal system. Minor misdemeanours can mean grave consequences, and a dream holiday can easily become a nightmare.

The series kicks off in beach paradise Phuket, following the Naval police who try to both keep their personnel out of trouble and ensure that organised criminals don't fleece them out of their pay.

A 21-year-old sailor hires a jet ski and the enraged proprietor claims it came back damaged, demanding an exorbitant payment and brandishing a sniper rifle. Will the dispute turn deadly?

Meanwhile, British traveller Micha ends up spending a night behind bars when she's caught with a small amount of cannabis. Her boyfriend attempts to post bail but, with the authorities demanding a gigantic sum, it doesn’t look good.

A somewhat over-the-top warning for backpackers planning a trip abroad.

Bravo will follow three British ex-pats helping the Thai tourist police deal with westerners in a major series this autumn.
Big Trouble In Tourist Thailand [working title] is an 8 x 60-minute fly-on-the-wall series by Vera Productions. It follows Howard, Louise and Tim, who help the police deal with holidaymakers unfamiliar with the country’s traditions, culture and rules. Situations range from drug busts to organised tourist scams, scorned lady-boys, violent brothel disputes, bar-room brawls, brutal murders, street robberies and sexual assaults. The series is shot mainly on location in the popular tourist hotspots of Koh Samui, Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya and Chang Mai.One featured story is that of a 19-year-old Cumbrian girl whose two-week holiday with her boyfriend turned into a two-and-a-half month stretch after she was caught in possession of cannabis at one of the infamous Full Moon parties in Koh Phangan.Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand was ordered by Bravo senior commissioning editor Lucy Pilkington.
