England to play Thailand
Monday, 10 May 2010.
The FA has today confirmed that England will travel to Thailand in June 2011 for a friendly international.
Following the European Championship qualifier with Switzerland on Saturday 4 June at Wembley, the Three Lions will make the journey to Southeast Asia prior to the end of the season.
The friendly, which will commemorate the 65th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, will be the first ever meeting between the two countries at international level, and the historic fixture will continue a growing bond over recent years. In July 2008, Fabio Capello attended a coach education seminar in Thailand to aid the development of local coaches.
Thailand's manager is a familiar face to England supporters, former captain Bryan Robson who was capped 90 times by his country and scored 26 goals. Robson took over from another former England international, Peter Reid, last September.
The match will also build upon the incredible interest in English football that already exists in the region, due to the huge impact of the Premier League.
In January of this year Thailand played host to Denmark and Poland in a friendly tournament, before narrowly missing out on qualification for the Asia Cup in March when they were defeated by a single goal by Iran.
At the end of this month, Thailand will travel to Cape Town to face South Africa as they prepare to host the World Cup Finals for the first time.
The date for this match has not yet been confirmed, full details, including ticketing information, will be available in the next membership period.
