RIP MacBook Pro

About a year and a half ago I bought a nice new MacBook Pro from iStudio here in Bangkok.  I loved that computer.  It was the only other thing I was proud whipping out in public (the other being cash, you pervs).

After returning from Hua HIn on Sunday, Ked and I decided to grace the Hideaway with our presence.  I set my MacBook Pro on the living room window sill which is the only place I can get wifi reception at the moment until my DSL is set up.

It rained that night but that's usually not a problem.  There's a bit of an overlay coming off the roof which means rain doesn't fall near the windows.  But Sunday it was big rain and big wind and instead of falling straight down the rain was blown in the partially opened window.

When we got home my poor MacBook Pro was sitting in a puddle of water.  I carefully extracted it, unplugged everything, and tried to see if it was still working.  No deal.  Screen was blank.

I took off the battery cover, removed the battery, and put a fan on it all night to help dry out the insides.  I plugged it in in the morning to see if it worked and . . . nope.

I left it all day Monday to dry out and tried again.  Still nothing.

I ended up taking it to a repair shop in Siam Discovery and they told me they would call me back in a day or two.  On Thursday they called to tell me that I had fried the backlight display, the logic board, and the part that carries juice from the power cord to the battery.

The cost of parts alone was quoted at 50,000 baht.  WTF?!?  Labor, of course, would be more.  And that's if everything worked.  They could still find more stuff broken once they got the thing running.

So, I have had to say goodbye to my old friend.  I have replaced him with an iMac (I still have an old MacBook that I can use for travel).  I'll always remember the times we shared.  The TF forum debates.  The porn surfing.  Sorry, I'm getting a little sentimental.

So, if you haven't seen me on TF in the last few days . . . . that's why.  I lost a good friend.

And just like I would do with grandma, anybody know a good place where I can sell out the parts for cash?

one benefit i got from using mac comparing with pc is that my mac never get crash nor get virus whenever i was on my dreamland....porn site. im loving it! lol

for your last Q, you may check out at Machomeservice.com, 02-616-6679 as someone here recommended for fixing my old mate.

Next time get the extended warranty Apple care (2 years). And remember every time an electronics is made wet; DON'T TRY TO TURN IT ON TO SEE IF IT WORKS - This always shorts out the sensitive circuits inside. You need a professional to have it cleaned up with special solvent baths and everything.

If you want, maybe I can buy your macbook? I'd like to try to fix it while I'm in Canada and parts are cheaper. Or maybe you want to buy my macbook pro display. I have a spare (slightly faulty) display I can sell very cheap. That will save you ~24,000THB for replacing it....

What a bummer!!!!. Machome Service might be able to help, good Mac tech there. The New Macbook (white) unibody is good, same logic board 13" Macbook Pro and the screen is a bit less reflective.

@Beej: Yeah, HD Okay plus I do frequent backups. I even slipped it into my old MacBook and am running from there.

The thing actually works. It will boot up but the backlighting on the screen is blown. You can make out the login prompt but can't see anything else because it's too dark.

I might try Machome. See if they can help.

I might even see if I can't rig it up to display via my iMac display.
