I know I've crossed the US/Mexico border tons of times and simply been asked what my nationality was. Of course, that was pre-9/11 so I don't know how hardcore they are now but back then, if you "looked" American, they were just listening for the accent. Link to comment

kaunitz 0 Posted November 19, 2012 Report Share Knowing of, but not really thinking of the fact that Switzerland is no member of EU, I went to Zurich for the wedding of a friend of mine. No control at my immigration but when I was going back, I felt a bit hot because I realized that I did not have my passport on me. Austrian customs, very nicely, obviously convinced by my Austrian accent and my UN-ID card that I carried (which is NOT a travel document), let me go through without problems! That was back in 1998.
