Fu**ing French, and good French

Since I've been in Thai sites, I could only read bad comments about French people, but when I ask why, nobody answers, even in TF...

I've been living out of France for nearly more than 14 years, I know why, and for God sake, I hope I won't ever HAVE to live there again.

But I would really like to know what is YOUR reasons to dislike French ppl (I know MINE).

On another hand, I begin to see that some TFers are learning French, so maybe they don't dislike it so much, or maybe it's just an horrible duty... So I wonder...

Apart of that, if anyone needs help with French language/culture, you can count on me, even if you dislike it.

well... my mom and my Grandpa hate French.... due to historical reason.

I dont hate them - i dont love them... most times i like them....bc i dont study history. - But some French ppl can be irritating... For instance, there was a time a couple of French ppl walked into my place speaking French. i answered them in english .. and they couldnt understand.. Then they furiously shouted, "Nobody can speak French!!" ~ I was like.... hello - this is fuking thailand... and isn't english universal enuff?? freaks!

there was also another time, a french lady came in with her american husband. she couldnt understand what i was saying and didnt try hard enuff to understand it. and that was just annoying... so i turned to her husband and said, Please explain to her what i just said - because I'm not going to put up with the fuss. The husband was so embarassed he had to drag her out of my place! he he he....

ok...hope my story helped.

Hi Sylvain, well, I think you prove for me that I don't dis-like the French LOL. The reasons that i've heard from ppl who have been to France are:

1. French won't help you if you don't speak French(directions for example), even if they speak your language.

2. The French are very arrogent(sp)

Personelly, i could care less what someone is and that's why i have many friends of many nationalities. We are all individuals right? Hmmm...what are your reasons Sylvain my friend?

French are no worse nor better than any other people. I am sure that are some of your fellow countrymen/women you don't like or can't stand. I wonder why we never hear anybody complaining about some of their own !

uarewotueat, > That's right, ros bif :D "we" have always been ennemies LOL And Ros Bif are clever enough to manage we have been in war with Germany instead of with "you", 2 world wars, isn't it clever?

harleyguy> How do you do that, seems interesting how it works...

Melanie> That's really tipically French, made me laugh.

Thanks all of you, very interesting answers, which confirm my sensations.

I agree most of French don't make any struggle to go towards other culture because they are THE culture, others are just barbarians, specialy about other languages (but many US are quite the same, I've noticed) specialy to help people (directions for example). Arrogants, who do not accept that they are not any longer the empire and the language every high class is speaking in the world like at the end of the 19th century. Hooly sh*t, WE invented the Human Rights, why everybody don't bow at us any more?

I only go there on summer now, when the weather is warm and ppl more relax, but I remember all those months of sadness and depression in winter... All my friendship to you Porpor, I think I can understand you, and I was not coming from a country like Thailand... "We" are tought not to share, not to show emotions, all is intelectual (in the best case...!!) and you must be able to justify thorically (even if your "theory" is bullsh*t). Descarte was French, cuting thinking from body. Play and enjoy: what are you talking about? Very negative also: talking about movie or whatever, you don't say "It's good" neither "I like it" but "it's not bad".

Something which have both sides for me (I'm French hehe) but can appear only on the bad one for foreigners (also bcz many live only the bad one): freedom. I care about you but you're free to do what you want, I won't put my nose in your life, do what you want, don't bother me with your problems and I won't bother you with mine. That makes a very cold way of living, every one apart, very lonely ppl. But somehow, I like the possibility of dying of sadness on my own, with nobody trying to get me out of it, sorry but sometimes it's worst when ppl try to "help" you...

Now, I don't juge ppl for what label they have, only for they are personnaly. We're just talking about tendancies. And sorry to be so long.

What my experience told me - just my two baht...

I always liked (and still like) French language and the French, and I have been to France quite for a while. Fact is, that they are chauvinistic people, but once they realize you are speaking their language, they turn out to be friendly and helpful (unfortunately to say: except for those living in Paris and especially the surroundings - depts 91-95). And you easily can bring them to terms. When I was at a real estate agency asking for a flat to rent, the agent started laughing and said my accent was so funny that he could not help laughing. Then I replied that I would like to laugh with him, so he should talk to me in German that I could laugh at his accent. As he was not able to speak a single word in German, he stopped laughing immediately and we were able to talk business. But this, except of one road accident thing with a guy of the Paris area (as I pointed out before) was my only negative experience. I spent several holidays and in 1994/95 14 months in France - and everything was great! I met a bunch of good people there! But maybe those living in the mediterranean area are more open than those living in the North, I don't know. Although I have not been to France for about ten years now, I am still a francophile!

Don't ask - if your not ready to hear the cold hard truth, lol.

Every race sux in their own different ways... There's no such nationality that would score full points... really. What matters is the individual.

Don't think that anyone mentioned this yet, but damn, when y'all going to learn to take a shower once a day? Nothing personal against you ONeil, OK? Never met ya before...

For the record I spent the first 2 years of my life near Nancy, in France. My Mom and Dad have really great things to say about our time there and the people and everything. It was different back then, France was very appreciative of their liberation from Germany, and still basked in the glory of their colonial empire.

Things change, I could go on, but I won't. I really have nothing against the French people, perhaps their leader, but then again, I hear about it all the time how nobody likes GWB.... C'est La'vive, ay?

"harleyguy> How do you do that, seems interesting how it works..."

Oneil, it is quite easy, just talk back to them exactly the same way they talk to you.

Some people may have difficulty being as arrogant as they are, but they should overcome that and then they will gain some type of respect from French people. Doesn't mean that French people will like them, but chances are they will stop being condescendant or arrogant. Mind you, not all French people are arrogant, Parisians are in a class in themselves.

Thanks really for all answers, it's very interesting and made me laugh quite often.

I can hear the cold hard truth...LOL and I don't take it personnaly (only to make progress...)

I agree with what you're saying. Living outside France made me see and understand what I dislike of my culture, and change also. But on another hand, made me apreciate some parts that I miss , although I fear that what I prefer is quickly disappearing... Thanks again.
