Sup people,

I am trying to find a few documentaries largley based on Thailand. Can anyone recommend me a few? So far I've watched "City of Ghosts" and it was great, but not to much emphasis on Thailand(is was a movie anyway but..) I've also seen "The Beach" same thing.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

i havent seen many documentaries that were very interesting about thailand, but sometimes there is stuff in travel programs.

most of the docs that i am aware of are at least partially funded by NGOs and thus deal with whatever human rights crisis the NGO addresses and not the broader aspects of southeast asian culture. most also focus on myanmar and cambodia, rather than thailand.

the sex trade in its various aspects has been done to death, i havent watched any of these as i don 't find the subject that interesting. i don't owe the NGOs any favors, i feel i'm doing enough by not spending my money on hookers (i implement this strategy by avoiding having money, makes it easy).

if you find any interesting films let me know. also, i will be in beijing this trip, if i find any dvd docs on thailand i'll pick them up. they'e massively expensive (a dollar apiece).

if you dont' have satellite some cable providers offer a TIVO type DVR, and you can specify it to record anything having to do with thailand...

There was one documentary about the King that was done by the BBC in about 1981 that is still worth watching. It's called The Soul of a Nation. It's banned in Thailand. Although I have a copy.

Come and get me you ******* at the Cultural Surveillance Center.

Although it is old, it's an interesting look at the monarchy and what the country was going through during that period. Remember, Thailand was bordered by Cambodia, which had just gone through the horror of the Khmer Rouge and was now occupied by Thailand's rival Vietnam which had its troops right up on the Thai border, and Laos, which had gone communist and killed its own royal family.

Thailand was supposed to be the next domino to fall.

And there was still a communist insurgency in many parts of Thailand at the time. Although it would end within the next couple of years.

I believe it was banned in Thailand because of what HM said in it about the death of his older brother.

Not sure if you can find this on Amazon, but check.

I'd be very interested to see that, Lobert. Do you have the equipment to burn me a copy? I'll buy you a Lexus.

If it doesn't work let know. I think aems is Asian Educational Media Service and its out of some university in Illinois. I don't think you can get these documentaries from them, but if you see one that interests you, maybe you can track it down someplace else.

I do recall watching one documentary called AIDS: Pademic Thailand. it dealt with a woman by the name of Lek suffering through her AIDS ordeal. She has long passed away now. Though, learning about the sex trade in Thailand, I agree with you on not spending money on hookers. Not my "steelo"

Louburt--Thanks for the link!! Didn't know there were so many docs out there!

Well, I'm kind of a Thai history freak, the same as you I guess. Didn't your mom ever teach you about sharing?

Sure she did. But you offered to buy me a Lexus. Didn't your mom ever teach you about keeping your word?
