Stramash
[h=1]Higher taxes on alcohol/cigarettes[/h] The Nation August 21, 2012 4:34 pm [h=2]The Cabinet today approves the Finance Ministry's proposal to slap a heavier tax rate on alcohol and cigarette products.[/h] The Finance Ministry reasoned that this action would raise the government revenue as well as reduce consumption of the unhealthy products. With immediate effect, the excise tax rates on eight cigarette brands will be raised by Bt6-Bt8 a pack. The rates on alcohol products would be raised to Bt120 per litre of alcohol for domestically-produced products and Bt400 for imported products, regardless of alcohol content. The excise tax does not require a legal amendment, as the new tax rates are still within the legal limits. :(:(:(:(:(:(
FarangFarang
I was just about to post this. Alcohol, tobacco taxes up The cabinet on Tuesday approved the Finance Ministry's proposal to raise the excise tax on liquor and tobacco, meaning an immediate increase in the retail price of liquor and cigarettes, but not beer or wine. The excise tax hike is effective immediately. The alcohol excise tax on rice whiskey was increased from 120 baht a litre to 150 baht a litre based on alcohol content, and for blended liquor from 300 baht to 350 baht per litre. The tax on brandy increased to a maximum of 50 per cent from the existing rate of 48 per cent. The new rate does not apply to beer or wine, which already face maximum taxes. Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong said an increase in the sin tax will boost government revenue and help deter people from drinking and smoking. Excise Department director general Benja Luicharoen said the increase will cause the price of liquor to rise. She confirmed the excise tax on rice whiskey is up from 120 baht to 150 baht per alcohol content (100 degrees) while tax on mixed liquor, such as Chiang Chun (Chinese herbal spirits), is up from 300 baht to 350 baht per alcohol content. The excise tax on brandy is up from 48 per cent to 50 per cent alcohol content, she confirmed. Mrs Benja said the higher taxes on tobacco and alcohol will increase her department's revenue by 12 billion baht annually, 10 billion from tobacco and two billion from alcohol. Observers said the increase would probably raise the price of a bottle of lao khao whiskey by about 10 baht. The government spokesman did make the announcement at a press conference because of a worry about stockpiling and profiteering. The government would get about two billion baht in extra revenue from the liquor tax hike, she said. The cabinet also approved an increase in cigarette tax on the volume side (tax per cigarette, or its weight in grammes) from 85 per cent to 87 per cent. The maximum excise tax allowed is 90 per cent. This means the price of cigarettes could increase by six to nine baht per pack. Imported cigarettes from China, selling at lower prices, face the highest tax increase of up to 20 baht per pack. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/308702/alcohol-tobacco-taxes-up
Admin_2
That is a lot...400 baht per liter? Holy poop. Does that include Heineken or beer Laos? The comments on posts like this on TV are hilarious though. You'd think that their children were being stripped away from some of them.

The comments on posts like this on TV are hilarious though. You'd think that their children were being stripped away from some of them. TV always cracks me up. No matter what the subject, even if you're talking about landing a remote vehicle on mars, within 10 responses somehow someone will find a way to turn it around on Thais and blame them for everything wrong in the world. Here's a little experiment, next time you're in a bar and you hear someone start or end a sentence with "F'ing Thais" ask them if they're an active member on TV. If they are, you have to take a shot. You'll be on the floor in under an hour. That's one of the reasons I ended up on TF years ago. I got tired of the constant harping on TV and couldn't really relate to the teacher forums where there's a new thread every week asking whether or not 15,000 baht per month is enough to live on in Bangkok and-or "Can I buy a teaching certificate on KSR?" T.I.T. !!! no no it's Mars, they put the Rover there... But I am sure thais build it and not to mention a load of money in B.I.B. pockets... Yeah in most danish boards, before page 6 in a thread, Hitler or Goebbels will show up, no matter the subject, and same thing is happening in TV, I usually comment on facebook to the articles there, and one time it was about a tuktuk driver in Phuket, who was hired to drive 6 peoples rate 400.- THB (expensive but that is the rates in Phuket) customer turns up with 10 peoples, when they reach the destination the tuktuk driver ask for more money (in a way he moved a greater load, so in a way fair I think) - they end up in a fight and later at the policestation... So far so good, the tuktuk driver apologize, he even offer compensation to the customer - who refuse, and say everything is OK, I don't want to press charges, I am satisfied that the tuktuk driver say he is sorry... Police have to fine the guy (tuktuk driver) 2,000.- THB AND additional he gets a 3 month suspended jail sentence... All the "usual suspects" start howling that the guy should be punished, evil evil and he got of only because he bribe someone and what's not... I started to say, he did NOT get off, he has been punished, the offended didn't WANT him punished, but he still according to thai law got punished, fined and a suspended jail sentences, anyone in the world can the next 3 month go there and insult the guy and he can do NOTHING to prevent it... Then no one wanted to discuss any further But clear to me there are MANY automatic responders on TV... That's one of the reasons I ended up on TF years ago. I got tired of the constant harping on TV and couldn't really relate to the teacher forums where there's a new thread every week asking whether or not 15,000 baht per month is enough to live on in Bangkok and-or "Can I buy a teaching certificate on KSR?" Actually a surprising high number of farang will willingly do anything to bend the rules almost 720 degrees, just to stay in this country, and at the same time they use a lot of time complaining about thais who cheat... I see a lot of farang who willingly pay a lot in bribes, and tell openly about in in the internet... Who willingly tells anyone that if You hide 1,2 or 300 THB with Your drivers license, You will get off for speeding or even run someone over... And on the same time they anger about B.I.B and the corruption... As if those two things don't connect in some way... I mostly read TV, the articles, and if I am bored or need some laughs, I read the comments... It seems to me that most of the members know Thailand from within a bar... As for this thread... 400.- THB pr. liter of alcohol, that will not amount to much in a Heineken beer anyway, I do not know the pr. cent in a beer, but in Denmark it would normally be around 4% I think... But I would think this is for thai whiskey and stuff like that... . .
