all i know is that something is a bit on the nose in kanchanaburi. i seem to remember a thai policeman being arrested for killing 2 british backpackers in a restaurant in kanchanaburi recently. normal people don't drive past a crowded bar and shoot wildly into a crowd.

Kanchanaburi has a reputation for being the gun capital of Thailand.

I was there in about October last year at the River Kwai festival and you could shoot .22 pistols and rifles. 40B for 5 shots I think it was. 2 stalls over you could buy shots of whiskey from a University booth (wtf!). Hard liquor and guns in one convenient location, who could ask for more!

More recently at new years I was drinking in a bar there. At midnight one bar owner appeared shooting his pistol into the air, not to be outdone another bar owner opposite started doing the same. It was at about this stage that I decided to call it a night.

update;

Ms Fitzpatrick, of Springwood in southern Brisbane, was gunned down early Monday morning by unknown assailants at the UP2U bar and restaurant in the town of Kanchanaburi.

Its British expatriate owner has been involved in a bitter dispute with locals and appeared to be the intended target and Ms Fitzpatrick was the innocent victim, Thai police said.

Ms Fitzpatrick had arrived in Thailand at the weekend with her sister, Jenny, to spend a holiday in Kanchanaburi, near World War II's bridge over the River Kwai, 150km west of the Thai capital.

Her father, Kevin Fitzpatrick, has arrived in Bangkok to be by his daughter's hospital bedside and reports that she is in a very serious condition.

"Her spine is shattered; her spinal cord is damaged ? we don't know how much," Mr Fitzpatrick said on Sky News.

"She can't breathe for herself, she's on a respirator.

"As a nurse she seemed to be attracted to helping people who were wheelchair bound and paraplegic and quadriplegic.
