Help<--Hotel/Destination-Sugestions 4 Newbie!!!

Planning a trip with my parents. Anyone have any sugesstions 4 a Newbie to Thailand on good hotels 1,200 bht-1,500 per day..In Bangkok away from the entertainment districts maybe closer to the shopping districts downtown. Also any suggestions of same rates in Chiang mai And suggestions of what to visit and see in Chiang mai...Any help on suggestions from good past experiences

Going trekking and getting high used to be the order of the day.But i guess bringing parents plus Shinawatras clampdown has put a big spanner in the works for the 2nd bit of that suggestion.Still the trekking sans artificial stimulation is quite enjoyable and what is many people going to CM end up doing to some degree or another.
