A quality business for farangs in Thailand

I am aware of the many pitfalls for a farang creating/owning a business in Thailand, and possibly/probably wouldnt risk investing myself.

However in the Financial Times there is an article about the CEO of Tesco's creating a chain of top end fitness centres/gyms in Thailand, using his own money.

As this is the man who has made Tesco's such a worldwide success (2 billion dollars pre-tax profit for 6 months posted yesterday.) he is obviously no fool, and his lead may be a very interesting one to follow.

So i ask the question if you had a substantial sum of money to invest in Thailand what areas would you be looking to invest.

An entrepreneurial friend of mine has recently bought a massage parlour and a bar, im not really looking to go down this avenue.

Something in the healthcare or infrastructural areas. Both are areas still growing (or with lots of growing potential) in Thailand's situation. Or retail, lots of logistical productivity enhancements in that area too. But as you said: If I were a rich man...

I was going to look into setting up an agency to send Thai nurses and doctors to the UK, then they changed all the rules for employing non EU citizens.

A company specialising in health tourism for westerners not wanting to pay absurd private medical costs could be looked into.

What about a very upmarket grocery store along the lines you get at Fortnum&Mason's , Harrods,Fauchon etc etc. There's enough designer fashion shops around in Bkk but few ,if any decent 'designer' food shops.Easiest way would be to persuade one of the aforementoned shops to license out the use of their name in return for a percentage of profits.Thats probably going to be fairly tough though.

I would invest in an establishment specialising in gentleman's recreation. Most food consumers are price driven and the faranrs are already largely catered for my Villa and the other food shops in the high-end malls. but I would love to see more delis and food/wine shops.

Well perhaps ...but Villa is little more than a glorified Pakistani corner shop.Harrods food hall is essentially a highly superior deli....I think little franchises stuffed into the Emporium/Paragon et al would do ok.We could put it next to your Gent's recreation store

I can honestly say that if someone opens an import store similar to Villa around ABAC Ramkhamhaeng, it would be a very big hit. There is a lot of money and a very international mix of people in this small area. The nearest place to get groceries is Big C which is situated two kilometers away at the end of soi 24.

When I moved in here four years ago I had to walk a kilometer to even buy fruit on the street. Now there are plenty of streetside fruit vendors almost around the clock. The high end Ban Itsara has recently opened nearby and the Inspire development is slated for completion sometime near the end of next year. Can you imagine there isn't even a Starbucks around ABAC? I repeat... There is tons of money here and lots of these snobby kids wanna flaunt it.

POLAR OPPOSITE

I'm sure that was what the CEO of TESCO's thought when he bought his first GoGo Bar......................throw caution to the wind.......

Dude this sounds like something you and I should be talking about!!!

I'll mention it to K. Surapong (the owner of Villa) who's just openned Sukhumvit Soi 11 and is about to open Ari.

If anyone's interested in investing in an existing Pie Business and Youth Hostel and restaurant and/or the expanssion of either or both, let me know.

PS. I think you might find the Starbucks fad has also expired. They might have started in University campuses in the US, but Thai University students, including those desperate enough to think they can simply buy an education by going to ABAC, are far to budget concious to patronise an overpriced, mediocure coffee and stale pastry vendor.

The new airport should see continued development of the, previously forgotten, area around Rama IX and Ramkamhaeng.

that said, i see an awful lot of thai students in there when i walk by a starbucks. don't apply common sense to college students, you will lose every time.

try villa @ thonglor 15. nothing looks like pakistani corner, charlie.

emporium & paragon are tooooooooo boring. as everybody always knows ... the mall group lacks of creativity. big time!!!

i like "central food hall" & the supermarket @ iseton deparmentstore. the best in bangkok i can say.

i would very much love to see something that has the same concept as "waitrose" in bangkok though. oganic and high quality food.

haha well i will certainly check out that branch of Villa. The other ones i've been too remind me of those Europa food stores you see in West London.Certainly quite ok plus very convenient.

Agree Paragon is a bit lacking in character...though Gaysorn gets my retail graveyard -of-the -year award .Emporium i quite like.....maybe its the brasserie on the ground floor. Not a bad place to lounge a few hours away....

Will make a note of Isetan's food hall.Sounds like a goodplace for sashimi-to-go -- _ -- ....thks
