shortyg
I tip most of the time, the service game is a rough trade to be in so if people can give nice friendly service they deserve a tip. If however the service is rude or just **** then they do not deserve it.
Slurms
if people can give nice friendly service They can rape their souls enough to smile at people all the time and feign happiness through their shitty jobs ? Well as long as it makes you happy you'll bless with with a few bahts .....they should start a religion about you ....or at very least a series of telivision documentaries praising your works . If however the service is rude Yeah , in which case **** them . There is a line .
eagle
I have spent many years living with waitresses and know that in the USA tipping is a large part of their salary. Sometimes Diner owners would pay below minimum wage through reported hours manipulation and then less taz is taken out etc. Even with all the playinmg around with the wage it is still small in a diner. Tipping is considered their bonus but it is an expected part of the salary. In US its more then a courtesy it pays the rent. Now if you are aware of the importance of the little waitresses salary to take care of the kids and you leave her nothing well shame on you. tips accepted [email protected]

I did not mention Baht or Thailand, I run a bar so I work in the Industry and as a student I worked in a bar in Soho that was poorly paid, I relied on my tips to survive. I tried to give good service as I needed my tips. I don't understand why you ripped my comment apart Slurms, I did not say anything derogative about anyone. Stu_thailand
what about them 3-11 year old who sell flowers etc or play games to win money!!i just give them 20 baht amyway without the flowers, some of them can be cheeky but and i refuse!! i came out of the solo bar in samui and one was still hoovering about,do these kids not go to school? If you give money to these kids you are really giving money to the gangsters that send them out to work every night. Sad as it might seem I never give them anything. Yes it is sad, and I never give to them also because we know, as you correctly state, where the money is actually going. I did however have an interesting conversation with a Thai friend of mine a good while ago. We were in a Taxi at red lights, and a young lad came up and cleaned the Windows. I told him to stop as I had no intention of tipping him, for the reasons mentioned. My Thai friend gave him a tip. I then said to her, @Why the hell do you want to give money to the Gangsters", and She replied "Yeah, I know. but what is better - give money to the Gangsters and the Kids get food, or give the Gangsters nothing and the Kids get a beating for not making enough money" Food for thought. Welcome to LOS.

icebear45
The Service industry is all about providing service...and good, professional service at that , irrespective of the client/customer/guest's attitude.Tip only if genuinely warranted(in Thailand it often is)- and if service charge is included in the bill and you've had a crap experience, deduct it.Simple Spot on... robbie36
I always tip taxis very generously - say give Bt100 for a Bt50 fare. Not because the service is anything special simply because taxis fares are absurdly underpriced. Taxi fares havent increased in Bangkok since 1992 since when the cost of petrol has quadrupled and the cost of owning or renting a taxi has doubled. It is nigh impossible for a taxi driver to make an honest living with fares as low as they are. Personally, I would like to see taxis fares at around double the current rate. Then you would have better cars and more honest drivers. London is the best example of a superb taxi system... you could have it in Bangkok at half the prices. Kayle
If the service is not surpringly bad I always leave tip. Slurms
You guys would just love South Africa . Tipping is such a big part of our culture . We tip : Waiters , Car guards , Petrol attendants , the people that bag your groceries and just about everyone else in the service industry . Part of the price of spreading good will . So I suppose it's just strange to me when people gets so precious about tipping .
bored
hahahaha. this reminds me of a famous scene from reservoir dogs: "shut up! cough up the buck, ya cheap bastard, i paid for your goddamn breakfast." guys, thailand is cheap comparing to most of the westerner world (services i mean). it's like somebody else paid for your breakfast, in fact those underpaid semi-slaves. just don't be w*nkers and give something as tip. it's true thais don't tip much (just the usual 20 baht for everything) but they tip. defeat the hedgehog that lives in your pocket and put those coins on the tray if you don't want to wake up sedated and walletless in your bed ))))
bored
sorry, i forgot about the taxi drivers. while in bangkok i round up the fare to the banknote i have available in my wallet. if i don't have 1 baht i just give the fare minus 1 baht ofcourse. no taxi driver complained by now. somebody was wandering why is still cheap to take a taxi in bkk. they run on gas. that's about 8 baht a litre.can't compare to the 1 euro/litre (46 baht/l), the price of petrol in europe. cheers and don't forget to tip for your hair cut, bowl of rice, beer, taxi ride. even mama-san needs a tip. keep that in your mind

bored
1 Euro in Europe? Where the hell do YOU live?!?! I was paying 70 baht in UK last month i live in romania. the petrol is 1.10 euro here at the moment. it varies depending on the country. 1.00 to about 1.30. i was talking abt EUROPE... uk is uk and the price is about 1.44 euro/litre... if you wonder why does this comodity have different prices it's about having oil in the country and/or the relation with the big oil players. 70 baht is not bad though if you think of the average salary in uk and in romania. Khun_Sam
If the waiter/waitress makes more money than you, would you still tip them?
Baktru
Generally I agree with Afook. Two caveats: First, if the service charge has been added, I tip around 15% less the percentage service charge. Second, if I am returning to a place I tend to tip much more than a customary 15-20%. My GF freaks out. She thinks it's OK to leave just the coins only. LOL. Well, I worked as a waiter at a Chinese restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut, in one of my college jobs, and if I only got the coins I would have starved to death back then! When I walk into my favorite Vietnamese restuarant in Bangkok, they come running, and I always get my table. It's always interesting to read about tipping, especially from an American point of view. How often I've read about waiters/waitresses who literally live on tips, it has me flabbergasted. Here in Belgium, tipping is not customary at all. Leaving the coins is pretty common but even to just do that, it will take 'average service' at least. Where average is not meant in a negative way, but 'average'. About what can be expected. Only if it's really good do people tend to tip around here...
Baktru
if you like the service, please do tip.it gives a lot of encouragement to that person who offers you the service, really In Europe I barely ever tip. In Asia I do IF I'm happy with the service. Which si quite often, but certainly not always.
babyoiy
I still wonder what the service people prefer.a nice customer who doesn't tip, <<< I'd say it's a tip of the day already. or an a**hole who's going to rewrite the menu or can't accept delays but who tips generously <<< So this a**hole is not that all bad then. I always tip except if I got a very bad service. I went to get massage and scrub so it took 2 hours time, the girl who serviced me didnt make me satisfied with the way she massaged me, I was not going to give her any baht but when we done, she said she got so tired, been working 4 hours continue.. in this case I gave her a hundred tip.
