The Universal Declaration of Human Rights???

BINGO! :D I owe you a beverage, or few, at the location of your choice.

Yes, the UDHR was signed on 10 Dec 1948 and celebrates its 60 Anniversary this year. It has been translated into over 360 translations.

(just in case any TF members didn't know while working their way through a few amber brews - they may well actually be a drunkards language version! )

From the six UN official languages ?Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish? spoken by billions of people, to Pipil, spoken by some 50 people in El Salvador and Honduras, the UDHR holds the Guinness World Record for the most translated document in the world. During the World Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004), a project to have the Declaration translated into as many languages and dialects as possible, was developed

The UDHR continues to hold the world record as the most translated document. With more than 360 language versions to help them, UN organizations around the globe will use the year to focus on helping people everywhere to learn about their human rights. The UDHR was the first international recognition that all human beings have fundamental rights and freedoms and it continues to be a living and relevant document today.

From the Office of the High Commissioner website http://www.ohchr.org/EN/UDHR/Pages/60UDHRIntroduction.aspx;

Even though those 50 odd Pipil speakers have a copy in their language, the UDHR still has no meaning for the likes of the junta in Burma, PM Samak, the CCP, Bush, the Sudanese govt nor Mugabe........etc, etc

which begs the question: what is the most widely distributed, yet generally ignored text?

hint: answer, same-same.

yes ...The Bible continues to be the most translated book in the world. The following numbers are approximations. As of 2005, at least one book of the Bible has been translated into 2,400 of the 6,900 languages listed by SIL,[1] including 680 languages in Africa, followed by 590 in Asia, 420 in Oceania, 420 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 210 in Europe, and 75 in North America. The United Bible Societies are presently assisting in over 600 Bible translation projects. The Bible is available in whole or in part to some 98 percent of the world's population in a language in which they are fluent.

Some sad details there, but i guess not somewhat suprising.

oh it's actually a good book. keyword: BOOK. sadly, i have serious doubts as to whether allegations it was written by God are indeed honest. for one thing, you can't expect me to believe that God speaks that many languages...

I guess this is really spreading the word to have reportedly translated it into 2400 languages! (Where are those 210 languages in Europe?)

And I must confess I find it unsettling to a degree given the propensity by some to use and abuse religious texts in some parts of the world.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights???

Naahh, you wouldn't want everyone to know about these surely... :wink:

Happy 60th!

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 60

As the world celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December, High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says the historic document offers hope for the future and urges continuous efforts to make the Declaration a reality to all.

?All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood,? the first article of the UDHR declares.

?These words resonate today as widely and as movingly as they did in 1948. They speak with timeless and inalterable force of both the power of rights and of our kinship in rights,? says the High Commissioner on Human Rights Day 2008, when the Universal Declaration turns 60.

?The power of rights made it possible for an ever expanding number of people to claim freedom, equality, justice, and wellbeing,? she adds, saying that thanks to the UDHR, ?for the first time all human rights ? civil, cultural, economic, political and social ? were recognized as belonging inherently to all people, rather than being gifts magnanimously bestowed upon them, or denied to them, by design, fate or the whims of ruling regimes.?

Think the bible actually beats the UN;

as of August this year, the ENTIRE bible had been translated into at least 438 languages, while portions have been translated into at least 2454 languages.

The 3 most translated authors are (ind descending order) Walt Disney Productions (can a company count as an author??), Agatha Christie and Jules Verne.

But... what about microsoft manuals?? Would love to know where they come in the Top 10...

....that would be the most translated text, but in 1997 Bill Gates realised that nobody ever read them and replaced the text with his endless sexual fantasies...

..He was found out in 2000 when a postman from Norway used a page to make a paper airplane for his son and was astounded when he was asked by the 7 year old..."Daddy what is a 'rimming'?"

...diplomacy and lots of money helped to keep it far enough away from the press for a long enough time to be only spread on web forums, whereby any credibility was shattered instantly....

Is there are Penthouse Forum?

...it would be interesting to go 'undercover' and find out what kind of people go on it and what they talk about...

..I mean, if I told somebody back home I enjoyed talking in the forums on a dating website called Thailand Friends....they'd instantly assume that I was trying to get laid....and talking about sex

Nothing could be further from the truth about what I do on Thailand friends, and the almost 'cult' enigma that is it's forum.....great wonders of web folklore and amazing thought decorate it's historic past....

... I would instantly assume that somebody on Penthouse forum is permanently masturbating ......and talking about sex

...but do they have the philosophy?
