alvish
Always wandered why in Thailand at the age of around 18 to 25 girls and guys would wear braces on their teeth, in the UK etc. this is done around the age of 12-15 and is normally a reason to be bullied (tin grin etc.). In Thailand though it seems to be the opposite all the cool kids are doing it. Not sure if theres status, style, or medical reason for this. My original guess is to show wealth again as the family is able to afford it. Seems to be mostly with the university students.. its got me baffled.. Loburt
Some desire straight teeth. But, according to the local papers, there are lots of teenagers and twentysomethings with perfectly straight teeth who wear braces because they think having a smile full of metal -- often in bright red, pink or blue -- is cool. They're just plain nuts.
alvish
"They're just plain nuts." Yup loburt I think that pretty much sums it up. My girlfriend only recently got braces, shes 22, and her teeth are fine. Every month she goes to the dentist and comes out with new colours. Before we had the business she couldn't really afford it and it was the 1st thing she spent her earnings on after starting up the business, thats why I thought it might have something to do with class or status, it shows that they can afford dental treatment. khun_lung
My ex-gf had braces and continued to keep them even after they were no longer needed. Why? It's something of a fashion statement as others have suggested. And perhaps a sign of relative affluence since poor girls can't afford braces, even the fake ones. The local newspapers have also reported on this local fashion thing for braces, and point out that shops for fake braces are proliferating. The other side of the coin is that if you observe enough Thai girls, teeth that are misaligned (too many teeth, not enough space to accommodate them all) is more common than in the West and that too accounts for more girls (and guys) wearing braces. alvish
Yeah my GF got 4 teeth taken out before the braces were put on, remember I had to wait in the waiting room for 2 boring hours,( though I did learn that scuba stands for self contained underwater breating aparatus and pretty much anything u need to know about PADI courses and diving in Thailand) Apparently "she would be beautiful if she got her teeth taken out" I hope he wasn't implying that she was ugly. Does seem like an easy way to get business though just tell every person that walks through the door that they are ugly and he can fix it. If it is a style thing or a fad how long has it been going? thejudgegiles
A Thai buddy of mine is a dentist, we were discussing this once, he told me that (as we can ll see) it's a fashoin/status thing... but also pretty much a futile attempt to do anything anyway, I went to an orthadontist as a chld and wore a brace with night heargear when I was about 11, for 18 months, which corrected my teeth, and closed a gap between my front two teeth big enough for a 50p coin... that worked fine, and i now have a straight pair of gnashers... Teeth, even in asian adult mouths won't adjust much beyond the age of 17... and (so I am told) - thats fact. Anyways, the amount of girls wearing them against guys is outta line (excuse the pun) and so that says it all.... Vanity here sometimes spoils the beauty of natural beauty. However it's a good reason to get outta work for a few hours once monthly.... =)

XCHANELX
Dunno about that in Thailand but here in the US most ppl I know who wants to have straight beautiful teeth tend to go for Invisalign instead of the chunky brace http://www.invisalign.com/generalapp/us/en/index.jsp The invisible way to straighten your teeth, without braces. Thanks god I dont need those
Tuttuttuktuk
Well I think the Braces are a conspiricy to make attractive Thai women look ugly so they not get a boyfriend,Thus not have sex before marry cause guy will think they are ugly. hahahahaha There does seem to be alot of over 18 yr old Thai girls with braces here, But then i look at it as this.If your interested in a girl whos all you want but the braces scare you off. Over look them cause when they come off after maybe 1 yr she have a beautiful smile and you be so proud of that you waited for her.(maybe) Looks are not the most important thing, Compatability of personnality is what counts. alvish
Plastic surgery seems to be about aswell, I have a Thai friend who has got it twice, her and her mum both went at the same time, they both got their eyes changed to look bigger i think. When I was goin to Ko Phangan, I was looking through all the different leaflets scuba etc. and saw a leaflet for plastic surgery so looked through it its quite cheap. I was thinking who is gonna go to Ko Phangan to get plastic surgery, then I thought maybe they hopin some people off their face on drugs and alcohol will end up strolling in, ppl do strange things under the influence... I handed this leaflet to my GF, she wasn't ammused...

CiaranM
I guess the message to any Thai women thinking of getting braces is that the Thai guys may think you look extra cute but it's likely to have the reverse effect on farangs -- Well at least on us "old" ones anyway. us "young" ones aren't over keen on the braces on cute young thai girls either ... Alexx
Teeth, even in asian adult mouths won't adjust much beyond the age of 17... and (so I am told) - thats fact. Anyways, the amount of girls wearing them against guys is outta line (excuse the pun) and so that says it all.... exactly. One of my male friends, 30 years old, here has braces - THIRTY YEARS OLD!! He says that he couldn't afford it when he was younger and that's why he has them now. Seems like a total waste of money to me. Plus, as other people have pointed it, it's incredibly unnattrative - braces juts make me think of excess saliva... yucko!
eagle
they just think its cool.. well, my friends wear them too and they told me that. I think its cool too. They look cute! well whilst you and your friends are thinking it looks cool and cute the rest of us are thinking you look like twats ! Twats with braces then, now Andy lets not generalize and say all who wear brazes are twats, or all who see them think it is a **** wearing them 8)
